This is a rather unique, vintage Hamilton Chronomatic Fontainebleau watch. It was purchased in 1969 and was put away after little use in favor of a Quartz watch of the type that came on market about that time . The watch case is made of stainless steel and it is in excellent condition. The original Hamilton leather strap is included. The crown is plain and unmarked. There are a few, very faint, hairline scratches on the back, better seen with a loupe but the front of the watch, including the gray-silver faceplate with the time, date, and chronograph dials looks neat and unblemished. The crystal is intact, clear and scratchless. It has setting controls for the time, date and chronograph functions. The watch is in its original presentation case which is also in excellent condition except for some faint, small, brown age-spots on the internal lining; it even sports the original price tag insert. The presentation case is encased in the original factory shipping cardboard box which is also remarkably well preserved. The original instructions manual printed in Switzerland in five languages is also included, perfectly readable and in fine condition. This particular watch was adjusted at the Hamilton Lancaster factory circa 1971 and has not been touched since. I tested it recently for several hours on my wrist and it operated flawlessly both as an automatic watch and as a chronograph. There are several Automatic Chronomatic watches made by different watch manufacturers. These watches have a fascinating history which can be looked up in several web sites. According to these reports, their innovative automatic design resulted from a cooperative effort by several watch manufacturers including Hamilton, Heuer, Breitling and others. The design project was known as Calibre and the particular automatic mechanism of the Fontainebleau was designated as Calibre 11. Among the Automatic Chronomatic watches, this particular Hamilton Fontainebleau model may be one of the most attractive because of its unique tonneau shape and its appeal to the watch collector-horologist. According to the inscription on the back, this particular watch is water resistant to 3 ATMs, shock resistant and anti-magnetic. The inscription certifies the Fontainebleau model designation and lists the patent registration as Swiss No. 453220 and the model as No. 11001-3 which reportedly attests to the authenticity of its Calibre design.
