1931 Vintage Hamilton Piping Rock Wristwatch, 979-F, Solid 14K, Restored For your consideration is a nice example of a classic Hamilton deco gents dress watch (please see photos). The Piping Rock is very popular amongst Hamilton collectors and the watch is in a very nice original cosmetic condition for its age. An interesting article on this model can be found . This watch was professionally restored by the WatchGuy in March 2015 (at a cost of £200.00). A photo overview of this process can be found . Details are as follows: Case: is 14K solid gold and in an excellent condition overall. The case is 43 mm lug tip to lug tip, 29 mm wide (excluding crown) and 7 mm thick. There are small scratches present on the case which is to be expected of a watch of this age (please see photos). I didn’t have this watch polished at the service and although I can’t confirm if it has been in the past the edges look nice and sharp. The case has a monogram engraving as you can see in the photos. The flexible lugs work fine and feel secure. The case is very thin and sleek when viewed in person; it is amazing that they could manufacture such a slim mechanical watch in the late-1920s. Bezel: is in a good condition overall, considering its age, with a new nicks here and then (please photos). The enamel is a deep blue with stunning roman numerals in gold. Dial: is all original, with a butler finish and in and fair condition (see photos). The dial is a very simple art deco design with black minute track. The Hamilton logo and sub second dial are clear. The original hands are blue steeled and in a good condition. The original dial was professionally cleaned at the servicing and a clear protective varnish applied for future protection. Crystal: was replaced in the early 2015 service and in an excellent condition. The crystal is acrylic. Movement: is a very high grade, 19 jewel 979-F, manual wind US made movement and is keeping good time. The movement was completely overhauled in early 2015 and is ready for years of wear. The watch had a new mainspring fitted at service and has a reserve of around 36 hours. The serial number of the movement dates it to 1931. The balance staff was replaced as part of this service, the full paperwork will be included in the sale for the new owner’s records. Strap: is a genuine Hirsch (16 mm) Napa strap in black. I fitted this NOS strap after servicing. Summary: overall this is a nice example of a US made, vintage art deco dress model. Although originally a gents a watch given the dimensions and style I believe this watch would equally suit a female wearer today. This is true American art deco styling and all original. The Piping Rock is to many collectors the quintessential Hamilton model and it was a ‘grail’ model for me for many years. However, due to rarity and condition of this watch I have found that I rarely wear the watch and really needs to go to someone who will give it the wrist time it deserves.
