The 120 is indeed a workhorse, with an emphasis on durability over complexity. The movement has performed well within COSC-specs, and in fact damn near reasonable perfection (+1.16s/million). Ebel was founded in 1911 by husband and wife team, Eugene Blum and Alice Levy in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Under the direction of Blum's grandson Pierre-Alain the company became a major player in the fine Swiss watch industry in the 1970s and, unknown to many, Ebel produced wristwatches for C a r t i e r. The company was part of the luxury LVMH Group until the end of the 2003 and then was bought by Movado for $62.2 million. Ebel, along with other fine Swiss watchmakers have based their automatic watch movements on customising ETA movements (see "Movement" above). ETA, a company with 150 years in the watch movement business continues to remain the most popular and highly acclaimed Swiss movements in the world. ETA is now owned by the SWATCH group which has sought to give itself a competitive advantage by stopping the supply of the ETA movements to competing watch brands. In 2003, Nicholas Hayek, who served as the Chairman of Swatch Group at the time, announced that ETA would stop providing movements to other watch manufacturers and only brands owned by Swatch would be able to use them. As a result of this announcement, many competing companies complained that if they could no longer buy ETA movements, they would have to go out of business. When word of this was heard by the Swiss Competition Commission, an investigation was launched. It was ruled that if S W A T C H ceased providing movements to other Swiss watch manufacturers then it would be considered a criminal organization under Swiss law that would label them a cartel. S W A T C H was ordered to continue to supply its competitors but it would be allowed to gradually reduce its provisions to competition companies over time. Under their new directive from the Swiss government, ETA is allowed to reduce its supply to competitors by 30 percent in 2014-2015, 50 percent in 2016-2017 and by 70 percent by 2018-2019. It is widely known that ETA is hopeful that by 2023, it will have the ability to choose who it offers its supply to and will be able to restrict sales to certain competitors it does not wish to support. It is for this reason that watch companies such as Ebel are now focussing on producing their own in-house movements to reduce their dependency on ETA. The Sportwave, which utilised the top of the line ETA movement (ETA 2892.A2) was thus discontinued as an Ebel line despite it being acclaimed to be a truly fantastic Swiss timepiece (both mechanically and aesthetically). This auction is a rare last chance opportunity to buy a brand new Ebel Sportwave Diver (new old stock) at a great price. The watch retailed in the UK at £2,750 and was worth every penny.
