Description

Jumping or dead seconds is a rare complication. The complication appeared in pocket watches in the era of Breguet and saw its heyday in doctors’ wristwatches of the 1950s. The Habrings’ ethos of providing quality mechanical timepieces at an approachable price point, means the Jumping Second Pilot is much less expensive than most watches with this complication. They achieved this affordability by acquiring ébauches from ersatz manufacturer Chézard, which produced watches with dead seconds from 1937 until 1968 when the manufacturer went out of business. The first incarnation of the Jumping Second Pilot used those movements from 2005 until 2007 when they developed their own movements based on the Valjoux 7750. Already a highly-modifiable movement, the Valjoux 7750 was the perfect base caliber for the Habring2 Jumping Second Pilot, which the Habrings modified by including a jumping seconds module that they designed and produced entirely in-house.While this makes the Jumping Second Pilot rather thick–at 12.5 mm and 42mm in diameter–the watch does not feel bulky on the wrist. The case itself is simple, with only a brushed finishing. It isn’t polished or beveled, which is entirely in keeping with the Habrings’ aesthetic of understated simplicity. This simplicity is reflected on the dial, meant to resemble the dial on a pilot’s watch (hence the name). With luminescent Arabic numerals at the poles and printed inner and outer seconds track, the dial is legible and uncluttered, the whole timepiece an answer to what Habring collectors seem to want: no frills, no fuss, just pure unadulterated horological brilliance for a price that won’t break the bank.Habring2 Jumping SecondCase: Stainless steel case, 42mm with sapphire exhibition case back Movement: Modified Valjoux 7750 with in-house dead seconds moduleDial: Black dial with applied white gold markers and Arabic numeralsCondition: Watch is in excellent condition
