Beautiful and excellent condition Harwood turning bezel in stainless steel from late 1920’s The watch is in the Wristwatches Armbanduhren Montres bracelets book of Gisbert L. Brunner and Christian Pfeiffer-Belli It is part of history as it was the first automatic watch. Magnificent automatic steel watch for the US market from late 1920’s, turning bezel, Swiss 8 ¾ lever movement, 2 adjustments, 15 jewels, flat spring. Cream dial with Arabic numbers in green and black color. Small dot at 6’oclock to indicate if the bezel is locked or open to change the time. Cathedral hands with same color as numbers. Inside the case comes “Perpetual – Made in USA”. On the movement comes engraved “Harwood Self Winding Watch Co.” 15 jewels, Patent #1576120 – SF. On the movement you will note the hammer winder with two springs as buffer is clearly visible.
The story of the genius John Harwood started in 1922 on the Isle of Man in his little workshop repairing watches. He found particularly fault with the new wristwatches because their inadequate cases freely let in dust and moisture. And thus appeared the first prototype of an automatic wristwatch, adapted from an ordinary Swiss hand wound caliber. In 1924, he patented his invention. Then he partnered with Manufacturer SA and Walter Vogt, owner of the Fortis watch Co to start production in 1926. The history of the first series produced automatic wristwatches end up in 1931. The same year, Harwood presents the l’Autorist”. During the promotion of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual, Harwood and Rolex exchange correspondence. It was the beginning of an amazing story when Harwood joined Rolex. In 1956, a sincere apology by Rolex gave John Harwood full credit as the inventor of the world’s first automatic wristwatch.
