Oh boy!... Fortis really did it this time delivering a familiar yet completely distinctive watch in a limited edition chronograph named the Blue Horizon, reference number 656.18.95.If you have not seen this watch before, there is a reason for that. Back in 2014, Fortis released only 135 of these unique looking watches at BaselWorld. That is indeed a very limited edition, and apparently many of them got snapped up by Fortis afficienados.Based on the celebrated Fortis B-42 Cosmonaut chronograph, the designers at Fortis modified the watch to have an enhanced aesthetic worthy of a limited edition. Starting with the dial, Fortis used a copper colored sunburst finish that has to be seen to be appreciated. You could call it metallic brown, but that does not do it justice. The inky black PVD case and particularly the dial is extremely difficult to photograph so I have included a video of it in both shade and sunlight to give you the best preview of it. The dial color and finishing is only the start of the story behind this watch. Fortis used light blue accents on the chronograph hands and blue indices to take the design over the top (in a good way). The applied numerals and black edge dimensional indices are amazing (see first photo). This is a daring color combination and will surely give the watch amazing wrist presence. In a sea of black dial watches, this one refuses to be boring. The shape of the hands is also unlike any other watch out there... though it could be argued that some Omega SeaMasters have a similar style with skeletonized hands....I want to point out a special feature on the dial and that is the split date window. I have not seen this before by the day-of-week and date appear on opposite sides of the dial. The regular Aviatis watches do not have this unique feature. The carbon-fiber look textile watch bands both compliment the deep black PVD case coating, but also provides enough texture to stand apart. Fortis took the care to custom fit the watch band to the case. Notice how it is pre-curved to provide a close-to-the-wrist fit. This band has never been worn and still has the tags on it. In fact, this watch is completely new. I cannot tell you how difficult it is for me NOT to try this on, but I am using maximum willpower! ha haThe PVD applied to the stainless steel case has been thickly applied. It has a diffused gloss that shows soft speculate highlights, not hard reflections. See photos and video to see how light and color play on this case. It's a beautiful thing. As mentioned before, the Blue Horizon is based on the B-42 chronograph model in the Aviatis family of watches. While many people know the story about Omega SpeedMasters and how they were a part of America's moon missions, it might be less known that Fortis watches have their own reputation for space travel having spent many missions on space ships and space stations. They are also the choice of many professional pilots, and the Aviatis family is geared towards that demanding group of professionals. If you are considering this watch, then you probably know everything you need to know about it. If you need some facts about it, then here is a list of helpful data points:
