Illinois Watch Co. 16 size 23 jewel open face lever-set "Washington Watch Co., Lafayette" pockewatch. Rare and beautiful high grade private label, the Washington Watch Co. line of watches was made by Illinois for the Montgomery Ward & Co. and the "Lafayette" was produced in 23 jewel versions of 16 size and 24 jewel versions of 18 size. This Model 9 Bunn Special grade version is quite rare, Bill Meggers estimated its total production at 50 made but I believe the total production of this variant is actually around 120 made. Watch is fronted by its correct double-sunk enamel dial and is housed in a Star Watch Case Co. "Stellar" model gold-filled case. Movement serial number is 2903146.Running and gained about 2 minutes over 24 hours and I think likely hasn't seen a cleaning and oiling in some time. Very nice looking movement with excellent color and luster. Dial faces up well but has a number of light hairlines in the outer chapter and also has a small patched flake at the lower left corner of the inner chapter. Case is attractive with a good in hand look and feel and in nice shape but does have a ding on the upper part of the bezel adjacent to the crystal. Rear of case is engraved with the initials "J.G.". The markings and serial number inside the case back have a crude look and I suspect the originals became worn with a polishing and somebody has retraced with a sharp point.
