The telemeter chronograph is a feature of a wristwatch, which allows the user to approximately measure the distance to an event that can be both seen and heard (e.g. an artillery explosion or a torpedo strike) using the speed of sound. The user starts the chronograph (stopwatch) at the instant the event is seen, and stops timing at the instant the event is heard. The seconds hand will point to the distance measured on a scale, usually around the edge of the face. The scale can be defined in any unit of distance, but miles or kilometers are most practical and commonplace.
Our watch here measures distances of up to 20 Km.
This watch may well have belonged to a high ranking naval or artillery officer before or during WWII. Double chronograph is a watch that includes two separate stopwatch mechanisms in order to estimate two separate events of different durations.
The double chronograph was previously called Fly-back second. It was invented in the 19th century by Adolphe Nicole. During the 1930s, due to a smaller size the mechanism was able to fit the case of a wristwatch. All in all, a beautifully aged vintage watch in excellent overall condition.
This is super rare and highly collectible watch.
