I am please to offer from my private collection the ultimate antique 17th Century Memento Mori Skull Verge Fusee SELF STRIKING SONNERIE Regulator Oignon pair case pocket clock-watch,made by one of the most important English watch master from the "Golden Age of the English Watchmaking"-Charles Gretton,London c1678.
Ony 29 pocket watches are known to exist from this master and all of them are in museums worldwide.Only this comes from a private collection. A watch like this can be seen at the British Museum,London.This is an extremely important historic pocket watch-it has been made specially for the Roman Cardinal Giambattista Spinola (20 September 1615 – 4 January 1704)

 of the Catholic Church and an .So,this is much more than a rare pocket watch-this is a piece of the history!Lets talk about the watch:CASE:The watch has a highly ornamented and pierced gild pair cases. Please note that the crystal is originally mounted on the outer case,so the inner case is without crystal. The inner case is pierced with holes for better sound acoustic.
The outer case is decorated with a hand carved scene:
 you can see the symbols of both secular and religious power - Papal Tiara,crowns, scepters, swords, and more - all being burnt to ashes.Only a skull remain after all... This scene symbolize the transience of human life.It means that it doesnt matter if you was knight ,bishop or pope-the  exit is one and the same for all.
This all should remind to the Cardinal himself that he is mortal too.
On the case is engraved the famous Latin Motto "Sic Transit Gloria Mundi" that means "Thus passes the glory of the world." It has been interpreted as "Worldly things are fleeting." The phrase was used in the ritual of papal coronation ceremonies between 1409 (when it was used at the coronation of Alexander V) and 1963.As the newly
chosen pope proceeded from the sacristy of  in his , the procession stopped three times. On each occasion a papal master of ceremonies would fall to his knees before the pope, holding a silver or brass reed, bearing a  of smoldering . For three times in succession, as the cloth burned away, he would say in a loud and mournful voice, "Pater Sancte, sic transit gloria mundi!" ("Holy Father, so passes worldly glory!") These words, thus addressed to the pope, served as a reminder of the .MOVEMENT:WOW! This is the most amazing two trains verge fusee movement I have ever seen! A real masterpiece!
The watch has a complicated self striking sonnerie verge fusee fire gild deep full plate movement-all hand made and hand finished-fantastic hand pierced balance cock with floral motives.Special blue steel regulator,worm tension winding gear,hand hammered blue steel decorations,special unique hand pierced and highly decorated spring barel. Pierced and engraved resting barrel for the strike, some of the train with five leaf pinions.The watch strikes by itself for every hour on the gong mounted in the inner case.
Please note the very interesting mixed pillars!!! Gretton sometimes used a mixed pillars in his clock-watches due to the lack of space. Here he used both Tulip pillars and round baluster pillars.(reference;see the book"Charles Gretton.Through the Golden Age" figure 5.27)DIAL;
Fine porcelain dial with two winding holes-one for the watch and one for the sonnerie clock work.The dial is signed by the retail's store name.  Please note that this is the oldest watch in my collection-it is over 336 years old,but preserved in museum condition and PERFECT WORKING ORDER!!!
