GENERAL DESCRIPTION:Here we offer a mid to late 18th Century Swiss Verge Fusee in a 59mm Diameter, Diamond, Gilt and Enamel Consular Case, which dates to 1760c. The watch runs very well and both the Dial & Movement are signed Fres de Roches - a Geneve. The Dial, which has Arabic Numerals is in good condition (some hairlines) - with the winding arbour positioned at 1.30. A new glass crystal, with bulls-eye lens, has just been fitted. The diamond set bezel and back rim are made of Silver and a number of the diamonds are missing, 15 on the back and around 30 on the front, but these are easily replaced. The Enamel back is profusely decorated with a reclining Courtesan in the foreground, Chinese style buildings in the background and has the bust of a Chinese Nobleman in full Regalia ( Emperor?) on a plinth in gold relief, at top of centre. The picture measures 53mm in diameter and there are just 2 very small spots of enamel missing on the edge at 8 and 10.45. Inside, the case is signed "LETON" ( = GOLD-FILLED).The movement is in superb cosmetic condition, runs very wells ( +41 mins in 24hrs ) and has a 27 hour power reserve - Ref:289 DThis watch comes to you directly from a Long Time Local Collector and has not been on the market in more than 30 years. It is being sold in the condition as described and as shown in the pics.Fres de Roches (or Fres de Roches & Fils) are listed in Geneva, ca 1720 to 19th Century by G.H.Baillie, who states their watches are listed in 5 different collections. Britten mentions a watch in the Wallace collection ca 1720 and enamelled watches in ca 1750, 1760 and 1775. There was a watch (# 42) by Fres de Roches in the Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as published in 1907 and in my opinion the painting on the watch is far superior.Extract from the Heilbrunn Timeline of Art HistoryThe earliest watchcases with this type of enameling probably originated in Blois, a city known for both enameling and watchmaking, but Paris, too, was an early and important center of production. An increasing number of sources from which these enamel painters took their designs have been identified, and it now seems safe to say that many, if not all, were content to reproduce in miniature the work of other artists. Prints were often the medium of transmission, but in some cases it seems that the enameler had direct access to either a painting or a colored drawing of it.
In the last quarter of the seventeenth century, and especially during the years just before King Louis XIV withdrew the toleration of Protestants in France in 1685 with the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, enamelers who were Protestant, as well as many Protestant watchmakers, were driven out of France. Geneva benefited from the influx of watchmakers and also became the center of watchcase enameling.
