VERY RARE AND EXCEPTIONAL Solid 18CT Gold Stewart Dawson & Company Split Seconds Rattrapante Men's Antique Pocket Watch With Gold Fob   Brand: Signed Stewart Dawson And Company to the movement. Year: Circa early 1900's. The inside of the back case is engraved with the year 1917. Size: Dial measures 47.5mm wide x 52mm total case width x 18.2 mm thick. The watch overall weighs 131 grams. Model: Gentleman's Split Seconds Chronograph Pocket Watch. Dial: Original white porcelain dial, which for its 100 years of age, is in good condition. There are two noticeable hairline cracks to the dial, however these are to be expected in an object of such age and fragility. There may be some smaller hairlines too, i just cannot see these very well. The dial has no discolouration and the white colour is vibrant. The dial features a full 12 hours, with printed roman numeral markers. The sundials are in excellent condition with no damage. All the print is legible and bold.  Hands: Original blued steel hands. The pocket watch feature the regular hour and seconds hands, then further includes two additional second hands for the split second timing, and two hand for the sundials. All hands are original and in great shape. Crown: Original solid 18CT gold 'onion style' crown. Crystal: The glass cover over the dial is loose. I am not sure how to secure it of it there is something missing which hold it in place.   Case: Full heavy 18CT solid gold case. The case is in good condition with some damages. There are some dents to both sides of the case, and these have been photographed and shown in the photos provided. There are also some dents on the top and bottom of the case, and on the lids. Additionally there are some scratches on the front and back cases. The outside of the lid for the dial features and engraving for the initials of the original owner, A.O.F. The inside of the case is marked 3 times for the gold hallmarks, and there are several old service marks. Movement: Signed Stewart Dawson And Company Swiss Made - Split Seconds Chronograph Movement. The pocket watch does work and run, however it does not stay running, and will need a service before it can be properly used. I have NOT tested the chronograph function, simply because of the age of this piece and the complexity of the movement. I am also not sure if it is keeping accurate time. This watch is being sold as-is without any warranty as are all of our vintage watches, due to their sometimes unpredictable nature.  Boxes/Papers: I will be providing some non-original printed documentation to accompany the provenance and story of this item. The pocket watch comes in a vintage Drummonds of Melbourne case, however this in not original to the piece.   Provenance: This 18CT pocket watch was originally owned by Askin Ormond Foster, who was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery for the British Army in World War One. I will supply non-original documentation to support this. The date this information was published in the London Gazette was the 12th of August 1916, placing this right in the middle of WW1. The front of the pocket watch has the owner's etched initials. Furthermore, on the front of the dust cover, there is the full engraved name of the owner, including the date July 25th 1917. Upon some extensive research it was discovered that this date correlates to the exact date and year that Askin was married in Sydney, Australia. It is highly likely therefore that this pocket watch was a marriage gift to him. I will supply non-original documentation from a newspaper excerpt to support this story. Moreover, this pocket watch is extremely uncommon for the period, with only the highest levels of horological skill were capable of producing a movement of such complexity. Furthermore, to obtain such a piece in such an era was certainly a symbol of wealth, high status and importance. This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of true history, with a fantastic story to accompany it.   I am happy to ship worldwide, however i ask that you please contact me prior so i can quote you appropriately for the shipping costs.
