This automatic mechanical chronograph was issued to honor, and to be used by, the Frecce Tricolori, the Aerobatics Squadron of the Italian Air Force. It was purchased new in Mar. 2001. It is made by Eberhard & Co, one of the leading brands in Europe and especially in Italy. The watch is an automatic winding water-resistant chronograph made with Pilots' requirements in mind. The case is primarily stainless steel, with 18K ornamentation on, and under (but visible looking down on the dial) the bezel and on the crown. The pusher at 2:00PM position starts and stops the chronograph, and the pusher at 4:00 PM resets the central black chrono seconds accumulating hand. The watch has a Marignan screw-down crown (with 18 K gold ornaments providing a gripping surface), and a back held in place by 8 screws for water resistance to six atmospheres (88 psi). The face of the watch is white, with white luminescent applied hour markers (no numerals) and main timing hands. It has three sub-registers at the 6, 9, and 12. The sub-register at 12:00 PM reflects the 24 hour AM/PM register. The sub-register at 6:00PM is the 12 hour accumulating register, and the sub-register at 9:00PM reflects a small continuously moving second hand. The dial also has a central black seconds accumulating hand, and a central white (with miniature aircraft winged tip in black) minutes accumulating hand. The dial also reflects a tachometer scale in the outermost surround on the dial, a unidirectional rotating bezel for visualizing parts of time periods, and a 1/5/ sec scale. Finally, there is a date window at the 3:00 PM position just to the right of, and below, the logo of the Frecce Tricolori. Altogether, there are seven hands used by this chronograph watch, including the two time telling hands. The stainless steel bracelet is the Eberhard signature original, a solid, high quality bracelet, with hidden clasp. The bracelet and watch both show few signs of use, with a very few light wear scratches. The watch uses non-reflecting sapphire glass. The original signature Eberhard box with inner cushion, although the exterior is a bit ragged, is included, as is the white paper outer box, and the operating manual and original guarantee (in a single booklet) issued in Jan. 2001. This watch has not been serviced in several years, but appears to runs perfectly, keeping fairly accurate time, and all timing functions, including the chronograph pushers and settings, are operating as they should. The degree of water resistance was originally guaranteed to 6 atm. by the manufacturer, but has not been checked. This is a fairly large sized watch, with a case diameter of about 39-40 mm without the crown, and about 44 mm in dia. with the crown, and is in excellent condition, as is the original bracelet. It is also not commonly seen, as this type was somewhat limited in production by this now close to 130 year old, well-known, watch company |
