For many collectors and serious pocket watch connoisseurs, the Bunn Special timepiece featured in today's auction needs no introduction... Having established a reputation as one of the top tier Railroad Watches because of its durability, simplicity, and care taken in the manufacture of its movement, the 23 jewel Bunn Special's unique qualities have landed it among the highly collectible vintage American pocket watches.  The 24J Bunn Special served as one of the Illinois Watch Company's highest offerings from the period, manufactured during a the golden era of the United State's ascent to world leadership during the industrial age. As one of Illinois' highest grade timepieces, it incorporated the finest technical features available, packaged into an ultra-dependable and highly precise pocket watch. The 24-jewel version came about as watch companies battled to see who could provide the highest jeweled watch to customers. Adding the 24th jewel was simply a marketing ploy, as the jewel was non-functional in the watch.
Here are some of its features: Twenty four of synthetic ruby jewels Adjusted to insure precise timekeeping Hardened and tempered, compensating balance with solid gold screws including the timing screws; positive micrometric regulator Solid gold raised jewel settings Breguet overcoiled hairspring Specially constructed dust-proof case Beautifully decorated movement Glass enamel double sunk Gothic style dial Originally adjusted to run accurately in 6 positions, in different temperatures, and with differing amounts of power left (isochronism) The gold filled case engraved with is in better than excellent condition with no gold wear. The glass enamel dial is near perfect with one very short hairline. And the high-grade movement is very clean and running strong and true. Our watchmaker has freshly cleaned and oiled the movement. Included with the purchase is a one-year warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate attesting to its performance._______________________________________________ New to Pocket Watch Collecting? Following is a brief history on the creation of the standard for Railroad Chronometers: A head-on collision between a mail train and a Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway passenger train in Kipton, Ohio, in 1881, blamed on inaccuracy of one of the engineers’ watches, led to a first set of uniform standard for the production of the watches used by railroad employees. The crash, which killed 11 people, resulted in U.S. railroads adopting a uniform set of requirements for watches used by railroad employees. Called the General Railroad Timepiece Standard, they included rules for the types of components used in the watches’ movements as well as for the watches’ precision and legibility. They also stipulated that the watches be made in America so that spare parts would be readily available.
