18K - HEAVY WEIGHT - E HOWARD & CO SERIES IV - VERY EARLY PENDANT WIND Serial 30017. N size This is a very clean gilt full plate movement. There is one screw driver mark on the plate. The movement is running with a brisk and full range. Blued [and the proper single plum] screw heads and steel bright work are very clean. The whip regulator spring, frequently missing, is present and in very clean condition. The 18K case is slightly worn - the fine engine turning still present. Hinges do not over extend. Cuvette and both covers function appropriately. I have a passion for the research of 'interesting' dedications on pocket watch cases. In this instance, HP Wilbur, the Erie Canal employee to which this watch was presented was later deeply involved in Tammany Hall of William Tweed fame. 30017 is a very early serial number for production E Howard & Co pendant wind/set. The late Col. George Townsend appears to have invested work, researching American pocket watches. Col. Townsend's booklet "E Howard & Co 1858 - 1903", Heart of America Press, 1885, p. 10 identifies 30071 as the earliest pendant wind set then seen. I have seen 30071 and it is not a matter of simple numeric transposition - this a much earlier pendant wind set. Questions??? 519 472 8622 Free shipping to addresses in United States and Canada.
