Offered here is a 1 of a kind 5 star 18 size "self winding" pocket watch by Herman Von Der Heydt. This watch was hand made for the president of the Peoria Watch co. of Chicago in about 1884 (A.C.Smith name on dial). The 19 jewel nickel movement (no. 34) is self winding and also can be key wound. Von Der Heydt made a total of 35 watches, 30 gilt and 5 nickel movements. He held the patent for the self winding movement and was the only maker of self winding watches in America. Von Der Heydt worked for Elgin Watch co. before starting the "The Chicago Self Winding Watch Co." in 1883. He used some Elgin parts in his watches and made the rest in his own shop, such as the crescent shaped winding weight. The ingenious movement is full plate, lever escapement with gold jewel settings and adjusted. The gold filled case has glass back for viewing works and probably not original. Watch works, but has not been worn for years, with the exception of an occasional key winding. This watch is only for the serious collector so please no tire kickers!  Only ship to USA . Thanks for looking!
