Without question, this ladies pocket/pendant watch is one of the finest we've had the pleasure of offering. SUCH an exceptional solid 18k case, adorned in busy Rococo chase work and embellished with remarkably artist hand carving. Pocket watch case carving flourished through the latter half of the 16th century and into the first quarter of the 20th. Artisans were eager to find a venue by which to earn a living and through which they could express their creative urges. For many, the artistic medium of choice was the watch case. These talented, anonymous artists worked throughout the day, quietly creating works of art on watch case after watch case, painstakingly carving freehand with hand tools on a graving ball. These creations are finally being given the credit they deserve, as more collectors seek out watches based solely on the quality of their case carving. We are in love with the florid grape-and-vine motive and vacant cartouche of this work of art. Its original porcelain dial features thin Roman numerals surrounded by a graduated minute marks. Imperially slim blued Breguet hands are in excellent original condition! Press the hidden button, pop open an equally fanciful back cover and you'll find 18k Hallmarks, along with an engraved cuvette: Echappement Cylindre/roue trempee/Aiguilles/HUIT/trous en pierre fine/N19206 Which roughly translates to "Cylinder escapement/balance wheel/hands[setting] Eight fine stones." You'll find another treasure-within-a-treasure: a completely original, fully serviced mechanical pocket watch movement! We've carefully and professionally serviced the tiny beating heart of this timepiece so that it keeps relatively good time for its age. Admiring this mechanism renders one speechless: How could they have possibly created such a beautiful, precise instrument with the tools and machinery of their age? One cannot imagine how precise this watch movement is until one researches the history of engineering and knows the mechanical limitations of the Age. They, like the bumblebee, had no idea he couldn't do it, so they did it anyway: Created a magnificent "time machine" that is quite accurate and completely independent of batteries. Simply pull out the crown, set the watch, push in the crown, wind it with a key and you're on your way! If ever you've craved such styling, if you're feeling the need to demonstrate that fine taste of yours, this is the watch to own! Wear it to your next dinner party and prepare to fend off countless compliments! This stunning 37mm timepiece comes in a period leather presentation box in cranberry velvet, lined with satin marked: "Topham and White/Goldsmiths, Jewellers and Watch Makers/33 Crafton Street/Dublin."
As many of our fine buyers and repeat clients know, each day we offer a smattering of things we've picked up here and there, many fine watches and pieces of jewelry that for one reason or another we'll not be offering on our Web site – some new old stock! Take a moment to look through our eBay offerings and bypass the estate and yard sale madness for watches and outstanding pieces of Victorian and Deco jewelry – many of which are running and pristine – that are ridiculously underpriced. Watches this week include a '20s ladies antique watch or two, '30s Deco pieces, a '40s military style wristwatch, and fine Retro stainless steel wristwatches that are representative of a style that’s becoming all the rage; as well as gold rings and vintage wire lug examples perfect for restoration. Coming up are sterling silver wristwatches and a few items dug out of the workbench drawer of a retired watchmaker or two. Don't know anything about wristwatches? Have no idea about your grandfather's railroad pocket watch? We're one of the Web's largest vintage wrist and pocket watch dealers and are delighted to answer any questions you have about the timepieces we offer or those heirlooms you're unsure of. We extend a heartfelt invitation to see our other offerings and stop by to find out what's next!
