Description

For sale is this 1929 Hamilton Spur mens wristwatch in solid, 14k white gold, with inlaid enamel bezel & Roman numerals. It features Hamilton's famous, super high grade cal. 6/0 979 19 jewel adjusted movement. This watch is in extra fine, investment quality condition and runs and keeps excellent time.
Features gorgeous blued steel, gothic/cathedral hands, and crisp, stepped, unpolished, ultra deco case, and gorgeous original silver dial. The white gold Spur is exceedingly rare, a "holy grail" wristwatch for many collectors. Released at the beginning of the great depression, the Spur was the least produced of the three initial 979 enamel bezel watches from Hamilton, including the Piping Rock and Coronado, and is extremely desirable in white, 14K solid gold. Some estimates for production numbers of the white gold Spur are said to be as few as 500, and many did not survive the 87 years this one has. Many of these watches were likely melted down and converted to cash leading up to, during, and after the war, reducing surviving examples further. Hamilton's 979 19 jewel adjusted movement rivaled the best quality watches coming out of Europe at the time, and was considered the American Patek Philip. The Spur was advertised as having a "flair for the modern", with an unusual, stepped art deco case that looked to be spinning; the Hamilton Spur has been called the most sought after vintage wristwatch. At $125 retail in 1929, this was a very expensive and exclusive watch; offered today it would be priced in the thousands in 2016 dollars. Condition: Arguably the most important aspect of the Spur's condition is it's enamel bezel and case. The case & bezel on this watch are simply stunning. The black, inlaid enamel bezel is immaculate, with no scratches or damage I could detect even under scrutiny with a 10x loupe. The enameling shows the tiny irregularities commensurate with its process of application, but no scratches, chips or damage, it's near perfect; I have yet to see a better enamel bezel on any 20's or 30s watch. Case has no dings or damage, only extremely minor scuffs and one scrape on the back of the case at the lip of the back where it was opened. The snap-back has been engraved with the initials H.E.M. and has two mild spots of yellow gold show through, please see photos. The steps of the case are crisp and do not look to have been polished as many of these watches are. The male lugs are tight and straight. I believe the dial to be original with faint north/south brush marks still present, and factory crisp lettering & tracks. There is one noticeable scratch above the subsidiary seconds, and only some extremely minor nicks otherwise, all visible in the photos. Overall, just a beautiful, original dial. The watch retains its original glass crystal that mounts flush and is domed to match the radius of the watch, simply gorgeous, and completely scratch and damage free. The watch is fitted with a new, long, luxurious high-grade ring lizard band by Kreisler, a very old-school brand. The crown is correct and in beautiful shape, the watch appears correct and original in every way. The movement has been cleaned, oiled and timed by a leading authority on late 1920s vintage Hamilton watches; it sets and runs beautifully, and keeps excellent time. Measurements: 34mm long, and 28.5mm wide not including the crown. Overall length including the band is almost 9" (approx. 23cm)Dislcaimer: You are buying an 87 year old vintage, mechanical wristwatch. While it has been serviced and is running extremely well, I do not guarantee it will continue to do so for you. I do not warrant or guarantee vintage wristwatches.
