While other prestigious brands including IWC, Omega, Tag Heuer, Jaeger LeCoultre, and others made pilots watches, the Excel-O-Graph is the real deal. Sparing no expense with material or workmanship, Gallet timepieces were often too expensive for the average man to own. Instead, these extraordinary timepieces were purchased for specialized applications by the world’s larger institutions and organizations. Clients of Gallet include the Swiss and US Governments, American Airlines, North American Aeronautics, NAA Rocketdyne, Westinghouse, the US Coast Guard, Indianapolis Speedway, and other entities with the financial resources to purchase the very best. The timepiece in today’s auction represents a classic example of Gallet’s professional watchmaking at its finest. Ruggedly built for aviation, military, and engineering use from solid stainless steel, the gent’s full-size case houses the extraordinary Excelsior Park 40.68 movement. Hand assembled in Gallet’s own workshops, the EP 40.68 is considered to be one of the best engineered and most accurate time recording mechanisms of the 20th century. Due to Gallet's extraordinary Excelsior Park mechanism, the Excel-O-Graph surpassed the function and accuracy of the Breitling Navitimer, its closest competitor at the time. While working for the Gallet company, I was fortunate to acquire this important pilot’s aviation chronograph in such amazing condition. Handled with the care it deserves, the case shows only minor signs of use. The dial (face) is in 100% original condition with just enough beautiful aging to show that it is truly a vintage classic. Recently serviced in 2012 by Gallet themselves, the watch keeps excellent near-chronometer accuracy and all time recording features function perfectly.
