J.P. Stevens #107J.P. Stevens & Co. 16 size 11 or 15 jewel hunting case lever-set watch private label signed on the dial and movement for the retailer Benedict Brothers of 171 Broadway, New York. Very rare watch, J.P. Stevens produced 169 movements of his own manufacture in the mid-1880's in Atlanta, GA and these movements were a distinctive 3/4 plate model that was equipped with his Patent spiral regulator. This example is particularly unusual for being a double-signed private label and for having an eye catching 24 hour dial with red, black, and blue numerals. Watch is housed in an 18K gold Brooklyn Watch Case Co. hunting case that appears likely its original, and cuvette is inscribed "From Father, Feb 14th, 1885" and front of case is engraved with the initials "H.J.H.". Movement serial number is 107.Running and a nice looking movement with good color and some typical mild surface marks. Setting lever wants to retract to movement so has to be held out while setting. Dial has a colorful and eye catching design and faces up decently in hand but has numerous hairlines, some small flakes/chips, and several sections around the 8 O'clock area and the 11 to 12 O'clock area where it looks like some parts have flaked out and been glued back in place. Case is attractive with its engine turning in good condition with just some mild loss around the outer areas. Case stem has side to side and up/down looseness or play and crown is an oversize replacement, watch would benefit from having the play in the stem reduced and a better fit crown installed.
