SUMMARY:
A mint and very rare English 19th century highly engraved lever pocket watch ,with an unsual Patent movement by Charles Powell. The watch movement just fully cleaned and overhauled by my watch-maker and with a sweet crisp action and keeping good action. This watch is guaranteed to be a rare patent lever as shown in the pictures below and movement, dial and case are original to each other and guaranteed as such. The watch with several features which brings it into the rare and possibly unique category: the fine and unusual patent movement with the mainspring separated from the arbor and great wheel, which is fitted with maintaining power; the movement highly jewelled through the train, held in gold chatons and screwed into place; a true bimetallic balance with gold timing screws; the movement top plate clearly stamped Powells Patent and finally the case and movement are in pristine condition, with tight hinges and excellent gilding. The watch with a very rare patent movement, ca. 1860's. The full plate of 16 size and in excellent condition. This is a very rare item, see www.antiquewatchstore.co.uk, site index for a movement only in very damaged condition, see in particular the web-site, http://www.antiquewatchstore.co.uk/acatalog/101.html.. The patent taken out by Charles Powell, No 3144 in November 1862. The mainspring is separated from the arbor and great wheel, which is fitted most unusally with maintaining power. The watch is wound in an anti-clockwise direction like a fusee watch. I have never seen another example and searched the web a great deal in the last 2.5 years whilst I have owned this watch. The inside rear dust cuvette neatly signed by Albert Potter Gallery. The watch is in full working order and comes complete with a presentation box. The buy it now price is a clear reflection of the incredible rarity, stunning condition and long-term investment for this watch. Mint watches in this condition, can only rise in value, given the limited supply of such items. THE DIAL: 100% mint, the white enamel dial with fine black Roman numerals, and a separate minute track to outside of dial and small minute markers. The bright white enamel dial in crisp condition, with no hairlines, or chips. The dial diameter of 44 mm, and with original blued steel spade hands and seconds hand. The dial with small seconds subsidary dial and large bold outer chapter ring. The glass is in fine condition; THE MOVEMENT: 100% mint, with richly gilded three quarter plate in wonderful condition, of distinctive shape and design with the mainspring set within the pillar-plate. The well engraved balance cock and foot in superb condition with foliage and a diamond end-stone. The back plate with further decoration and Bosely time regulator, most unusually inset into the balance cock. A cut two arm bimetallic balance with gold timing screws. The movement with a lever escapement, with brass escape wheel, with flat hairspring. The movement further jeweled with nicely inset large jewels to the pallets and escape wheel and 3rd wheel and through the train, including upper plate jewel for barrel arbor. The watch unsigned, but numbered 18523. The watch movement in good order and signed to the top plate "Powell's Patent" and the number 685. The movement has a diameter of 42 mm. The movement with round ballustar pillars. Polished steel movement bolt with its original blued steel screw. Pierced gilded fusee stop work with iron hinge. The watch is key-wound, and set through the back. The movement with original gilt dust cover which closes tight onto the movement. The movement overall in superb order showing very little wear and excellent gilding to the plates and dust cover. The watch is much brighter and crisp than in these dark photos, which are limited by my camera and lighting equipment. The watch is in very good working order for its age and runs the full length of the fusee chain and comes with a watch key. THE CASE: 100% mint, the original solid silver case measures an impressive 53 mm outside diameter. The hinges are excellent with the case covers all closing tightly, and the bow is original to the case. The watch case with Manchester hall marks and sterling stamps and number "23". This is a very good quality and a substantial case, in fine order for a 140 year old chronometer lever watch and rare indeed. The case with the silver sponsor mark of "JH". The inside dust cuvette signed by Albert Potter Gallery and with engraving around the two winding holes. This is a high quality 19th century rare patent watch by Charles Powell and of fine quality. This watch has clearly had a sheltered life and was most likely kept just for "Sunday Best", hence its very fine condition. This is a very fine period watch in simply stunning condition, which is rare collectable item or a possible investment for the future or of course a fine gift for a birthday, anniversary, wedding etc. TERMS AND CONDITIONS:
