Description:Miniature French 18ct gold pocket watch by Paul Garnier Horloger Du Roi watchmaker to the King of France , the watch is numbered 641, the face is white with roman numerals & black hands, there is a coin edge design to the watch sides, a detailed engraved rear watch case & a plain inner dust case, all in 18ct gold, the watch is signed Paul Garnier & numbered 641 which I believe is an early example of his workPAUL GARNIER 1801 – 1869 Watchmaker of king Louis Philippe I in 1835Paul Garnier numbered his watches and it is assumed these numbers were placed on the movement at the time of manufacture, not at the time of sale, as was practiced by some other one-at-a- time makers. By this logic we assume the lower the serial number, the earlier the clock or watch was made.Paul Garnier received many honors as a horologer. Some of his accomplishments are as follows: 10 • Founding member of the Socie`te` des Horologers of France. • Received silver medals Paris Exhibition of 1827, 1834 and 1839. • Awarded a 5 year Brevete` in 1830 for his 2-plane chaff-cutter escapement. • Received gold medals at the 1844 and 1849 Paris Exhibition. • Awarded a “Medal of Honour” at the 1855 Paris Exhibition and again in 1860. • He was given the title “Chevalier de la Legion d’Honour”, one of the highest honours awarded to a civilian commoner, in acknowledgement of his public service. Dimensions: 3cms in diameterWeight: 21.8 gramshallmarks: Eagle head for 18ct gold.Condition: in a very nice collectable condition, the 18ct gold case is in good order, the movement is working order, the back case shuts in place. the face cover is good order but does not snap shut I think because the glass has been replaced with an incorrect modern replacements & sits too high.other than this it is a fantastic miniature pocket watch in 18ct gold.
