HISTORICAL INFORMATIONFerdinand Adolph Lange (1815-1875) - called Adolph - is considered the founding father of the precision watchmaking industry in the State of Saxony, Germany. Lange founded his company in 1845 in the town of Glashutte, near Dresden. After his sons joined their father in the business in 1868, they adopted the name A. Lange & Sohne. The company produced very high quality pocket watches, with the very best products generally given the "1a" designation. Today, A. Lange & Sohne is still producing some of the finest timepieces in the world.ABOUT THIS POCKET WATCHThis rare, 4 digit serial number (#7684) pocket watch was manufactured by A.  Lange & Sohne in 1871, during the lifetime of Adolph Lange. It bears only the name A. Lange Dresden on the dial and Adolph Lange Dresden on the movement (not the more typical A. Lange & Sohne designation found on watches after Adolph's death in 1875). It is of "1a" quality and weighs about 125 grams, including the case. Additional information can be found in the Certificate. The movement was cased in New York City by Charles William Schumann. It is a full hunter case, about 52mm wide, that bears 18k gold hallmarks, the case maker's initials (C.W.S.), and case number 7684, which matches the serial number of the movement. The watch is offered with a Certificate of Origin and a copy of the relevant Sales Document page from the Lange factory ledger obtained from the German Watch Museum, Glashutte, Germany (see pictures). My husband inherited this watch from his grandfather in 1974, after which it was kept in a safe deposit box. The watch still runs and keeps excellent time; however, it has never been serviced while in his possession. Furthermore, he has no information regarding its provenance or service records prior to his acquisition. Aesthetically, the watch is in very good age-related condition, showing minor traces of wear with faint scratches on the outer case surfaces and a very small ding on the coin edge. There is also a nick on the crown ring and faint hairline cracks on the dial. This watch is being sold in "as is" condition. Please feel free to email us if you require any additional information. International sales might be considered and will require additional shipping costs.
