You are looking at an early American Lever Fusee Pocket Watch signed E. Profilet Natchez, Mississippi. The cases have English hallmarks for Chester dated 1833.
Natchez Mississippi became part of the U S after it was ceded to the United States in 1783. By 1833, when this watch was made, it had been an American City on the Mississippi River for 50 years. You know that the owner of this beautiful watch carried it on river boats on the Mississippi River. Perhaps he was a river boat gambler?
Given the condition of this watch, it was surely still running during the American Civil War and would be a great watch for Civil War Reenactment. There are very few watches available that are Southern United States marked from prior to the Civil War.
The watch is in amazing condition, especially considering its’ age. This watch will be 200 years old in 16 years. The off white enamel dial has roman numerals, an outer ring for 60 minutes and a secondary ring for the seconds. I can see no hairlines, chips or cracks anywhere on it.
Lovely original hands. Excellent glass Bullseye crystal.
Beautiful Diamond end stone.
The original cases are English made Sterling Silver, hallmarked for Chester and the year 1833. I believe the watch was made, in Natchez, from English Parts ordered by the watchmaker E. Profilet. The hallmarks in the outer case have the spring, for closure, partly obliterated by the attachment of the spring. The inner case is drilled for the winding hole right through the city hallmark for Chester. These things imply they were done during the making of the watch and not during assembly in England.
The movement is Key Wind & Key Set, key provided. It is running and keeping good time and was serviced a few years ago by an excellent watchmaker who specialized in fusees. See the balance in motion in the photos. I cannot guarantee continued running since I cannot work on these types of watches. If for some reason you are not satisfied upon receipt, please promptly return the watch for a refund of your purchase price minus the shipping costs.
Shipping & handling will be by USPS and will cost $45.00. Non US buyers must ask about shipping rate before bidding.
