"Carousel" watches are a invented by the Danish watchmaker Bahne Bonniksen, who registered the patent in 1892 in England. His intention was to create a compromise between the "expensive" tourbillon and a normal chronometer - and he actually achieved better results with his carousel than some of the tourbillons. Carousel or Turbillion: To nullify the effects of gravity in pocket watches, the great French watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet invented the tourbillon in 1795, propelling the tourbillon history, the first watch with tourbillion was sold 1805. As a chronometer would almost invariably rest in the same position, gravity was a directional constant affecting the behavior of the chronometer's balance wheel and balance spring. In fact, the influence of gravity on the accuracy of mechanical watches had worried watchmakers for centuries. His ingenious solution placed the balance wheel, escape lever, and escape wheel in a cage, which then rotated a full 360 degrees making a complete revolution around itself, usually in a minute. In this way, the overall effects of gravity get balanced out, as the escapement of the movement never spends any significant time in one vertical position. 18k Gold Chronometer 52,5 Minuten Karussell (Tourbillion) Rotherhams London 1921. t.1176

Er wollte mit seiner Erfindung einen Mittelweg zwischen "teurem" Tourbillon und normalem Chronometer gehen und erreichte mit seinen Karussell-Uhren sogar bessere Ergebnisse als andere Hersteller mit Tourbillons.
