Bottom has a dark green material covered with the "Underwood logo."It's true you can get a much less expensive winder, but this is like the Rolls Royce for cars. One doesn't need a Patek Philippe, Jaeger LeCoultre, Rolex, Cartier, etc. - you can get far far cheaper watches - but if you want (and can afford) the best, this is the way to go. AND SINCE ITS BEEN SITTING IN MY SAFE FOR AWHILE AND THE UNFORTUNATE HAZING OF THE VARNISH, I'M OFFERING IT AT A FANTASTIC PRICE.

If you need it Mint perfect, you can always go buy one for near $2K !!Underwood (London) traditional renowned quality winding module, this "RotoBox" is SWISS MADE (I read some are being made now in Italy, undoubtedly less desirable and less costly).
NOTICE that Underwood is in fact now offering a CHEAPER LINE of winders.This one is powered by the classic motor to maintain and keep your automatic watch in optimum working condition. The ROTOBOX itself is the "guts," the motor that cycles the winder. It has a strong Swiss made mechanism, and should you ever need it, parts are replaceable from Underwood (I needed a drive belt in one of my winders and the Company sent me extras at no charge).

The box is made so that it can also be powered by 2 readily available standard "C" batteries simple 800mAh each (not only AC electricity). However, the winder (inner module) was not designed to be separated - it must be removed from the burlwood shell to access the battery compartment; it CAN be removed from the burlwood case but it is very hard to do, might result in a broken winder, since the company glued it in. I took mine apart so I could then just run it off batteries if I chose, but it too patience and work - do so at YOUR OWN PERIL. Underwood can do it, but you have to send it to them in Italy and the cost for shipping etc. would probably not be worth it. I have included a picture of the winder removed from a case of mine.CONDITION: NEW never used. Stored in the box as purchased from Shreve Jewelers in San Francisco a few years ago. HOWEVER, NOTE that the varnish has FOGGED, turned a milky white on the sides and in front. This I'm told can result from moisture affecting the finish. It can be refinished but again probably not at a cost effective point.
At the Price its being offered I would say don't worry about it, after a while you won't even notice it, but you WILL NOTICE the difference in your wallet from the savings. YOU WILL NOT FIND another one, Brand NEW, but with a cosmetic defect, at anywhere near this price !!
