This 1960's Paul Le Grande "DEEPDIVER" is for me the epitome of vintage.  If only this watch could talk the stories it would surely tell.  The untouched black dial has aged naturally to an amazing near uniform tropical milk chocolate color.  As the pictures show there are some remnants of faded black on the dial around the outer edge and around the numbers, but the dial is overwhelmingly brown.  This color change tends to be the primary product of a rarely seen chemical alteration/breakdown in the paint (aka paint defect) and secondarily due to environmental effects, so in time (many years) I would imagine that the little remaining black seen on the dial will morph into brown as well.  But, this is an unpredictable defect and it's entirely possible that the dial color will stay static going forward.  It took approximately 50 years for the dial to look the way it does today, so if the dial browns any further it's presumably going to take a long time for that to happen.  In direct sunlight the rich brown really pops.  The hands have developed some corrosion over the past several decades, adding even more character to a watch already bursting with charisma.  All of the original tritium remains fully intact, with the tritium on the dial having aged to a warm and inviting caramel cappuccino hue while the tritium on the hands have toned to a shade darker.  This subtle contrast looks stunning in my humble opinion.  The coin edged bezel, which smoothly rotates bidirectionally, has lost some of its original enamel paint but otherwise it's in excellent shape.  The heavy, all stainless steel case, which appears to be unpolished, is in wonderful condition, showing some signs of wear consistent with a approximate 50 year old watch.  The outer edge of the case back is engraved "100% WATERPROOF  INCABLOC  ANTIMAGNETIC  SWISS MADE  STAINLESS STEEL  AUTOMATIC" with "600 Ft." followed by "DEEPDIVER,""18 ATM." and "8477."  The inside of the case back is engraved "ALSTATER WATCH Co" followed by "SWISS."  Adding to the mystique of this watch is an engraved "3" on the inside of the case back, matching the engraved "3" on the back of the front right lug.  It is my understanding that this watch was originally owned by a Vietnam War vet, so the engraved "3's" may have some significance.  The crystal has light scratching. The 17 jewels unadjusted Swiss "ALSTATER WATCH CO" stamped Felsa 4007N automatic movement with quickset date function is pristine and keeps accurate time.  The quickset date feature works by repeatedly moving the hour hand between hours 21 and 24 until the desired date is reached.  While the red date wheel can be manually set it does not always roll over on its own.  Sometimes it does, other times it doesn't.  And when the date does roll over on its own or by way of the quickset function, it doesn't roll at 12 am, instead rolling over at inconsistent intervals (i.e. 5 am, 9 am, 11 am etc).  After recently winding the crown 39 full revolutions the watch had a healthy power reserve of approximately 41 hours.  The sharply threaded, non-dented crown winds smoothly.  Although this watch currently keeps near perfect time, given the issue with the date not rolling over consistently at 12 am as it should and considering that it likely has never been serviced (there are no visible watchmaker service markings on the inside of case back with the exception of the mysterious 3 mentioned above), a complete overhaul is suggested. This watch measures approximately 36 mm excluding the crown, approximately 39 mm including the crown and approximately 19 mm between the lugs.   Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 9.5 mm.  Including the crystal case thickness measures approximately 12.5 mm. As mentioned above, although this watch is keeping accurate time this is a vintage watch that has likely never been serviced.  As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old-school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time.  A full overhaul is recommended to keep this watching running strong.  Any servicing costs going forward are your responsibility. Please thoroughly read this entire listing and kindly ask any and all questions you may have prior to buying as this sale is final and no refunds of any kind will be given.  And please study the 12 high magnification pictures carefully as they are part of the description and serve as an accurate representation of the condition of this watch. Expedited and insured shipping along with signature confirmation will be provided.  Thanks for looking!
