The innovative Z-Watch, a digital watch with automatic movement, that won the Red Dot for Supreme Quality in Design on account of its particular qualities created by BMW's designers !!!"The really good news is that the jury has awarded prizes to the entire range of products made by our studios", stated at that time, the BMW's Chief Designer Chris Bangle, lauding the success of his team on a very positive note. "Particularly the design award going to our Z-Watch proves that our designers apply the same high standard of design to our accessories and lifestyle products as to the cars and motorcycles we create."The BMW Z-Watch did indeed receive great attention from the jury, this innovative time-piece leaving a great impression on the experts for the simple fact that on a small scale it bears out all the features that make BMW cars and motorcycles so outstanding in their design on a large scale: the sophisticated and clear outer lines forego any exaggerated decoration, making the watch a genuine sculpture from the start. And it is at the same time the outer "shell" of the watch that gives the highly functional and elaborate technology the right look in a very understated, unpretentious style. This piece of art was created in a joint development of BMW with Ventura, renowned Swiss watch manufacturer. The BMW Digital Watch runs on power supplied by a micro generator system (MGS) transforming wrist movements into electricity; there is no need for a battery. Time, date and the display format (12h am/pm or 24h military time) are intuitively set with the winding crown. A <<Sleep mode>> switches of the LC display automatically if the watch is not moved for an hour and thus conserves energy. In the normal mode (watch running), the power reserve is approx. 3 months; in storage mode (crown pulled), the energy is stored for a long time, in fact, even after 5 years, about 50% of the power remains available to run the watch instantly. A flashing symbol warns when the remaining power reserve falls bellow 12 hours. Add to this a unique font for the numerals on the electronic displays, created on advice of none less than Adrian Frutiger, the founder of modern typography.
The BMW designers have wrapped this state of the art technology into an elegant and timeless form. The case is made of stainless steel with a light grey finish; the two crystals are made of scratch resistant sapphire. The watch is secured on your wrist by a black fine calfskin waterproof leather band and a stainless steel buckle with a grey finish to match the case. The BMW Digital Watch withstands a pressure of 3 bar, equivalent to a water depth of 30 meters /100 feet.
