just over 18 size ~ key wind / key set both from the rear ~ service history unknown but the watch ran well for me over a 24 hour period running just a few minutes fast ~ i am sure with a nice cleaning the time could be made close to perfect & it would brighten up the nice finish that is retained by the gilded plates ~ housed in a decent later silverode case ~ topped off by a stiff bow ~ the crown is strictly for aesthetics as though even though it turns it does not accomplish anything ~ screw on & off front bezel & rear cover ~ a coin edging around the thick clear glass beveled edged crystal that is nice overall with some very minor edge chipping ~ signed in a curve below the 12 ~ E Howard & co ~ Boston i believe the dial with black roman numerals is original ~ it does have a partial hairline running down between the 12 & the 1 & a repair to the 7 at the edge of the seconds bit that all attests to it's age ~ even with these faults i feel the dial is still rather presentable ~ blued steel moon hands ~ nice 15 jewel gilded movement ~ signed E Howard & co ~ Boston & Reeds patent nov 24 1857 ~ serial number 875 ~ geneva stopworks over mainspring barrel complete ~ cut bi metallic balance wheel with gold timing screws located above the center wheel & upon close examination the discovery of upright pallets on the lever ~ in business from 1858 till 1903 the company did a bit of experimenting in their early days with the likes of helical hairsprings & chronometer escapements as well ~ today the company maintains the respect of collectors due to the quality of what they produced ~ i'm sure i don't have to tell you they are not making things the way they used to & are sure not making any more of these ~ i do not get to see many series 1 howards in my pursuit of finding antique pocket watches ~ in checking an old price guide i see this model listed with 2 stars & in mint condition a $10000 value listed ~ i do realize what i am offering is not mint in it's original case & the book is not about to buy it ~ but i do hope it can find a new home with an enthusiast who enjoys it.....you? please ask questions and resolve issues before you place your bid reserve? no reserve here! so if you like it you better place your bid now before it gets away! thanks for checking out my listing and if you are into watches please check out my other offerings & you might want to keep a half-an-eye on my upcoming listings as i am liquidating a long time watchmaker's estate-whilst i continue to span the globe for unique and exotic items to bring to your door!
you are the reason ebay is a success! Good Luck!

the release of atomic power has changed everything except our way of thinking... the solution to this problem lies in the heart of mankind.
