You are looking at a pre Civil War Pocketwatch by the American Watch Company, Waltham Massachusetts. This is A  RARE CHRONODROMETER, the name is in RED on the center of the dial. The Waltham Chronodrometer is a watch and a stopwatch. This type of watch was used, during the civil war, to time artillery shells. Since they knew how far their targets were, they would start the timer upon firing the cannon & listen for the explosion, at that time stopping the timer, to within 1/4 of a second.  This told them if they were on target. Very early serial # 14,554, which dates the watch to 1859.The American Watch company of Waltham Massachusetts was the first watch company in the world to make watches with interchangeable parts. This made watch repair of Waltham watches simpler and less expensive, even today. No other American factories were in business until after the Civil War. The only other watches you could obtain, at that time, were British style Fusees or European Bar Movements. The movement is marked Appleton Tracy & Co. It has 16 Jewels. KEY WIND & KEY SET, key provided. Diamond Endstone on balance cock, see pics. The watch is running great and keeps reasonably time. Some of the photos were taken with the watch running and some with the stop button pressed. The stop mechanism functions perfectly and the movement starts running again, immediately, when it is pressed. I cannot guarantee continued running since I cannot fix such watches. If you are not satisfied upon receipt, contact me and you can return it for your full purchase price, minus shipping.Nice, EAGLE MARKED, Civil War, American Watch Company Warranted Sterling Silver Hunting Case. Case is in very nice condition with a few small dings, as would be expected, see pics. Engraving on the front of the case is in very nice condition. When case button is pressed the front cover pops up and can be assisted open. The front hinge opens past 90 degrees and the spring is gone, all other hinges work great.  Nice Clear, Glass Crystal.
