Beautiful and excellent quality verge fusee pocket watch from very late 1600s - early of 1700s.
Watch is equipped with calendar - nice feature for early watch.
The movement with it's huge balance bridge made very much in style of Louis XIV oignon watches.
Both dial and movement are signed as Dufour London (emigrant from France?).
Among many watchmakers bearing Dufour surname of French and Swiss origin, Baille mention one Dufour in London in XVII c. and his fine watch with diamonds in case of lapis-lazuli, stored in Winter Palace of Petrograd (now Russian Hermitage). The watch is a good quality one.
The outer case is very detailed and is decorated with "The Flight into Egypt" repousse scene.
The back cover bears also portraits of four Evangelists along with their symbols.
Silver champleve dial is made of multiple pieces. Nice pierced and cut center piece is applied over blued steel.Movement is very nice with it's oversized balance bridge.
Movement is also decorated with cut and pierced plate that surrounds regulator.
Blued beetle & poker hands, mineral glass.
Watch is in very nice cosmetic condition, please look photos.
The movement is in running condition, runs in every position, however I don't guarantee it keeps time.
The cannon pinion is stuck, and I'm afraid to put much efforts, thus I was unable to set time.
However, the calendar complication is complete and working, but I'm not sure that the date jumps in midnight.
Watch comes with key.Watch is quite big - outer case diameter is 56mm, height is 62mm, thickness is 33mm, weight is 142 grams.Good collector item, don't miss it.
Shipping from France worldwide. The flight into Egypt is a biblical event described in the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 2:13-23). When the Magi come in search of Jesus, they go to Herod the Great in Jerusalem and ask where to find the newborn "King of the Jews". Herod becomes paranoid that the child will threaten his throne, and seeks to kill him (2:1-8). Herod initiates the Massacre of the Innocents in hopes of killing the child (Matthew 2:16-Matthew 2:18). But an angel appears to Joseph in a dream and warns him to take Jesus and his mother into Egypt (Matthew 2:13).
The episode is frequently shown in art, as the final episode of the Nativity of Jesus in art, iconic representation of the "Rest on the Flight into Egypt" developed after the 14th century.
