DESCRIPTION: This is a very elegant men’s pocket watch from J. Assmann, manufactured around 1900s in Glashütte, Germany. The watch is fitted with a crown winding and set movement with a bar lever escapement, compensation balance, Breguet spring and swan-neck regulator. The watch case is made of 585 pink gold. The front and back case covers are signed J. ASSMANN GLASHUTTE and the gold halmark and have no dings just fine scratching. The elegant, white enamel dial is signed J.ASSMANN GLASHUTTE 1/SACHSEN and has black Arabic numerals for the hours. There is an index for the small second at 6 o’clock. The gold hour and minute hands are designed in the decorative Louis XVI style.
The inner side of the upper cover shows the imperial crown, manufacturer signet and fineness mark “0,585”. The movement is signed “J. Assmann Glashütte .” and numbered 20194. The watch case measures approximately 52 mm in diameter. The watch proved to be fully functional during a short-time test; no guarantee on accuracy. It is in good condition with minor traces scratches on the front & back cover.
Julius Assmann
Julius Assmann was born in 1827 and first learned the watchmaker’s craft in his birthplace of Stettin (formerly in Eastern Prussia, now Poland). In 1850 he started working as an adjuster for the watch manufacturer A. Lange, where he was able to expand his expertise. In 1852 he established his own company in Glashütte, Präzisionsuhrenfabrik J. Assmann, producing high-quality precision pocket watches. Until 1880 the company almost exclusively produced watches for export purposes. After the death of Julius Assmann and his son Paul, who had assumed management of the company, J. Assmann became part of the Thuringian watch company Edmund Hermann AG in Glashütte. After Edmund Herrmann had to declare bankruptcy after the First World War, Julius Albert Fritz Assmann (a grandson of Julius Assmann) took over the company, renaming it J. Assmann, Deutsche Präzisions-Taschen-Uhrenfabrik, Glashütte, Sachsen, GmbH. Assmann was forced by the Great Depression to immigrate to the United States, putting an end to the watch company’s story.
