J.W. Benson watch featuring a high quality Cyma mechanism and an unbelievable Borgel-design case.(but theres a bit more to in than that...)
This ca 1935 timepiece was made for J.W. Benson of London by the Tavannes-Cyma Watch Co. of Switzerland, a highly regarded watch firm founded in 1891 by H.F. Sandoz.
Utilizing an Exceptionally RARE Francois Borgel "Hermetic" cushion case Design that is one of Borgels rarest cases
Enamel Dial "Trench" Watch

It is pieces Like this that set appart good standard collection to truly UNIQUE collections watches with a story a history and a character that is quite simply Priceless

History Clockmaker to the Queen and the Prince of Wales, J.W. Benson of London was a prominent jeweler famous across Europe for its clocks, pocket watches and, later, wristwatches. Benson started as a partnership between Samuel Benson and James W. Benson. Around 1840, they were selling watches under the name SS & JW Benson, Cornhill, London. By 1855, the partnership was dissolved; from 1855 to 1891 the company traded as J.W. Benson and moved to Ludgate Hill.It held royal warrants during the second half of the 19th century, starting in 1876, for Queen Victoria, the Prince of Wales, the King of Siam and the King of Denmark. Ludgate Hill was the primary factory, and there it produced three main watches, 'The Field', 'The Bank' and 'The Ludgate'. The trade name 'The Field Watch' was registered in 1885. The factory continued in operation until 1914, when it was bombed out, destroying 12,000 watches.
Although the servicing department carried on at Ludgate Hill after this J. W. Benson never again made its own movements From this point on, it imported movements from Switzerland. After closing its doors several years ago, the JW Benson name was bought by International Watch Co. (IWC) and is now being marketed by Chopard GB Ltd.

The CaseA "transitional" watch between the watches pocket watches of the late 1800s and the modern wrist watch we know today it was watches like this that would have been worn on the wrist.
From pocket watches those trench watches inherited hinged front and back covers. The lugs for a strap looked like a thick wire attachment to the classical round shape of pocket watches rather than an integrated part of the body of the later and modern wrist watches.
That Said there is not very much else "Standard" about this RARE hermetic design model from JW Benson, featuring an amazing solid sterling silver Oyster-style case made by the Francois Borgel, arguably the finest wristwatch case maker there ever was. This design was an early attempt at making a water and dust proof watch and Borgel was no stranger to innovations in this area of watch case design. There are many examples out there but this is by far the most complex we have ever encountered and the only one we have ever seen we are happy to label this piece as "exceptionally rare"
Its cushion form, wire lug case 35.5mm lug tip to lug tip and 30.5mm in width (excluding crown)  34mm (inclusive)
The solid glass (not plexi) crystal is in mint condition. The sterling silver case is a four-piece design that is unlike any case we have seen before, either by Borgel, Rolex or Depollier. This a truly unique hermetic case design
It is in excellent condition with solid wire lugs that accommodate a wider 18mm band.(this is not a small watch of its era) To access the mechanism you unscrew and remove the coin-edge bezel, then you lift the upper section of the case off the watch. At this point you will see that the dial/movement are on a hinge that allows it to be lift up and turned over, where the mechanism is protected by its own (interior) sterling silver case back.
The inside case lid is stamped with a series of hallmarks including FB Key- Patent + 155.519 m - .925 - SFC , indicating a 1935 production date. The "FB" with accompanying key is for Francois Borgel. The inside lid (that covers the mechanism) is further stamped. 925 for sterling silver and with the same case number 2981.
We have seen many hermetic type Borgel watch cases but we have never sold the "Tropical" before

The DialThe white porcelain enamel dial is in excellent condition, featuring a black 60 minute outer track border, Arabic numerals, blue steel Bishop hands with a "stepped" or  recessed subsidiary seconds  dial with 60 second outer chapter and sweep blue steel seconds hand. Signed J.W. BENSON - LONDON below the 12 and SWISS MADE below the seconds dial.
The Movement A higher-grade Fifteen Jewel Cyma-produced movement with solid gold jewel settings and Breguet hairspring. It is signed SWISS MADE  15 JEWELS  PATENTED 842266
