Ours is the task of scouring the world for the special – the unique and alluring – wrist and pocket watches so that our guests may, at long last, find JUST the right gift and gesture of taste. It's a treat to offer this rare enameled pocket watch by pocket watch, as it is one of the world’s most unusual American pocket watches produced by the Elgin Watch Company.Elgin Watch Company was a grand endeavor from the moment it was conceived in 1864. Smoke from the Civil War had not yet cleared and businessmen were already being lured from Massachusetts' Waltham Watch Company to organize and build a monumental watch factory in Elgin, Ill. By 1865 the company was organized and capitalized with half a million dollars, and unimaginable post-war sum. The company’s leaders thrust themselves into the industrial revolution and were, in a few short years, running the biggest pocket watch company in the world. By the middle of the Twentieth Century they also dominated the wristwatch world, producing, among other popular models the "Lord and Lady Elgin" series distinguished by high-grade movements and futuristic case designs. Sixty years later, as the Deco movement was in full swing, art was on everyone's mind, craftsmen were doing some of their finest work, and American watch manufacturers were vying for the spotlight. Each sought to be set apart as the leader in style and design. The crash had not yet hit and money flowed freely from Wall Street to Fifth Avenue; customers could afford to pay whatever it took to have the finest, the best, the brightest. During this "Jazz Age," Elgin Watch Company decided to garner the spot as the finest house for unusual "Jazzy" timepieces. They commissioned, among others, famed artist and designer Lucien Lelong to create watches that would sum up the energy and sex appeal of the Deco movement. Enter this most unusual and desirable enameled 45mm pocket watch by Elgin. Exhibiting a strong Classical influence, this 17 jewel timepiece features a creme dial with "Elgin" and a thin minutes track around the outer edge. Thick Roman numerals are in relief within a black enamel "hour track" around the bezel of the watch. A gorgeous reeded crown with harp bow tops off a stunning look. No matter what the occasion, this watch – offered in a period presentation case – will be a thoughtful gesture and a reflection of excellent taste!
