Ladies' 14k Gold Lucien Piccard Bug Lug Cocktail Watch With Old Hollywood Provenance - SERVICED The only thing better than wearing a vintage timepiece is wearing a gorgeous piece with a fascinating history or association. We're quite pleased to offer just such a watch, given by famed Hollywood director Henry Koster to one of his studio assistants. Koster, born Hermann Kosterlitz in Berlin, Germany, began his career as a short story writer and cartoonist before becoming a scenarist, then an assistant to director Curtis Bernhardt. In the middle of directing a film in 1932; Koster bristled at an anti-semitic remark made by a German SA officer. He punched the man, knocking him out. He then went straight to the nearest train station and left Germany for France.
Koster travelled to the United States in 1936, after being offered a contract with Universal Studios through Joe Pasternak. Speaking no English, he convinced the studio to let him make "Three Smart Girls," which pulled Universal out of bankruptcy. Possessing an unusually keen eye for talent and performance as well as a masterful sense of timing, Koster discovered Abbott and Costello working at a nightclub in New York. He returned to Hollywood and convinced Universal to hire them. Few artists have matched Koster's combination of guts and skill. He directed six actors in Oscar-nominated performances: Cecil Kellaway, Loretta Young, Celeste Holm, Elsa Lanchester, Josephine Hull, James Stewart and Richard Burton. He directed important films including "The Bishop's Wife" (1947); "Harvey" (1950); as well as Richard Burton's first U.S. film, "My Cousin Rachel," and the world's first CinemaScope film, "The Robe" — both in 1952. "Désirée" (1954) with Marlon Brando; "The Virgin Queen" (1955) with Bette Davis; "The Naked Maja" (1958) with Ava Gardner and "Flower Drum Song" for Universal in 1961 – all were directed by Henry Koster. His last picture was "The Singing Nun" in 1965. After this movie, Koster retired to Leisure Village, Camarillo, CA, to indulge in his lifelong interest in painting, created a series of portraits of the movie stars with whom he worked. We're confident the quality and sophistication of this '40s era Hollywood timepiece will not be lost on our discerning clients. Everything about this high grade Swiss watch screams Old Hollywood — from its heavily stylized, solid 14k gold case with oversized "bug" lugs to its gorgeous pearlescent dial. To its high-grade, manual-wind Lucien Piccard Swiss movement. Obviously, Mr. Koster's exquisite taste and generosity extended well beyond his directorial abilities. Given as a kind "thank you" during the WWII era, the watch is a thoughtful gesture from an exceedingly thoughtful man. We have taken the liberty of cleaning, oiling, timing and fully restoring this stunning '40s-era timepiece; readying it for someone with a particularly discerning sense of style and appreciation of Hollywood! Measuring 35mm long by 20mm at its widest point, this is the PERFECT watch to flash when having the soiree or attending the recruiting mixer. It's guaranteed to incite waves of envy . . . We love our international clients and are honored to serve them. However, we cannot ship watches with crocodile/alligator or lizard straps overseas due to customs restrictions. We're happy to substitute a leather strap or ship without a strap.
As many of our fine buyers and repeat clients know, each day we offer a smattering of things we've picked up here and there, many fine watches and pieces of jewelry that for one reason or another we'll not be offering on our Web site – some new old stock! Take a moment to look through our eBay offerings and bypass the estate and yard sale madness for watches and outstanding pieces of Victorian and Deco jewelry – many of which are running and pristine – that are ridiculously underpriced. Watches this week include a '20s ladies antique watch or two, '30s Deco pieces, a '40s military style wristwatch, and fine Retro stainless steel wristwatches that are representative of a style that’s becoming all the rage; as well as gold rings and vintage wire lug examples perfect for restoration. Coming up are sterling silver wristwatches and a few items dug out of the workbench drawer of a retired watchmaker or two. Don't know anything about wristwatches? Have no idea about your grandfather's railroad pocket watch? We're one of the Web's largest vintage wrist and pocket watch dealers and are delighted to answer any questions you have about the timepieces we offer or those heirlooms you're unsure of. We extend a heartfelt invitation to see our other offerings and stop by to find out what's next!
