An inherited item being sold, as described in a nonworking condition. The watch has been described to me by a professional antique watch seller, as a late 18th century 18k gold pocket watch typical for the era. There are no special technical features built into the mechanism. The watch works are marked "Strasbourg" and the maker's name, J.D. Bahn, and the mechanism is numbered 466; the enamel face is marked with the maker's name and the location 'a Paris' which may indicate the maker had a retail shop in the city at that time. The same professional antique watch seller stated via email that the reference work entitled 'Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World' by C.H. Baillie references Bahn in Strasbourg in 1781. The interior of the gold case has stamped markings of DLI and 45TI with an image of what looks like an inverted shaft of wheat. The case is repousse style and in excellent condition without visible signs of damage; the watch mechanism is clean and free of visible damage; the enamel face of the watch has both Roman and Arabic numbers. There is a hairline surface crack on the face running from the winding hole and there are chips around the winding mechanism. The crystal is intact in the frame. The watch comes with the winding key. I have not been able to determine if the watch was intended for a man or woman, but it is of quite small size, as noted in the photos. I inherited the watch in excess of fifty years ago, and I have never attempted to determine if it is in working condition, hence I have advertised it as nonworking. An expert watch repair service should review the working condition of the watch and perform any necessary repairs. |
