An exceptional antique 18 size 14K gold hunting case private label pocket watch from two of the the most exciting locations on the American Frontier. Both the dial and movement are marked, "CHATERLAIN & GOLDEN, VIRGINA AND CARSON" , indicating store locations in Virgina City, Nevada and Carson City, Nevada. The importance of Virginia City in the history of the American West is well known. Virginia City's silver ore discoveries were not part of the California Gold Rush, which occurred 10 years before. At the time of the discovery of the Comstock Lode, silver was considered the monetary equal of gold, and all production was purchased by the federal government for use in coinage. In 1873, silver was demonetized by the government, in large part due to the flood of silver into international markets from the silver mines of Virginia City. Like many cities and towns in Nevada, Virginia City was a mining Boomtown. It developed virtually overnight as a result of miners rushing to the silver strike of 1859. But, Virginia City far surpassed all others for its peak of population, technological advancements developed there, and for providing the population base upon which Nevada qualified for statehood. The riches of the Comstock Lode inspired men to hunt for silver mines throughout Nevada and other parts of the American West. Carson City, Following the discovery of gold and silver on the nearby Comstock Lode in 1859, became a thriving commercial center. When Nevada became a state in 1864 during the Civil War Carson City was confirmed as Nevada's permanent capital and Carson City's development was no longer dependent on the mining industry and instead became a thriving commercial center. It is no wonder purveyors of solid gold cased watches like 'Chaterlain & Golden' set up emporiums in these important Frontier cities. For mention of 'Chaterlain & Golden, and histories of Virginia City and Carson City please see the links below: ,, This exceptional and most impressive timepiece would have been the sort of item purchased by a successful miner, politician, lawman, etc. Our research indicates the movement to be a high grade 17 jewel, stem wind lever set, 18 size timepiece built for 'Chaterlain & Golden' by the Waltham Watch Company in 1889 as an example of their Model 1883.
