In the last few years, the market for marriage watches has certainly grown. There are so many of these converted pocket watches now available. They come in different brands and vary in condition and quality. But how can you tell if the non-movement parts are genuine? That's where we come in. We look for originality and quality in these antique time pieces. Many of our marriage watches have their original movements, watch hands, and dials (quite often the dials are the original, unrestored porcelain dials, which age well over decades and even centuries). The crowns and cases are the weakest parts of vintage pocket watches. Sadly, since a majority of cases were made from solid gold, they were easily damaged or even scrapped for gold so did not last. If we are 100% certain that a porcelain dial is genuine and was never restored or repainted, we always state it in our listing description. Can marriage watches be worn on a daily basis? If you want to wear a marriage watch daily, you must take great care. In most of the movements there is no incabloc (a shock protection system for the balance axe) since it had not been invented when these watches were made. The glass used in most marriage watch cases is mineral; very rarely, we get one with sapphire glass, typically in smaller 44mm cases. If you hit mineral glass against a table’s edge or drop the watch (I hope not!), the glass is likely to break. Plus, the balance axe might get twisted. It is all fixable afterwards but the watch has to come back to our workshop. It's also best to keep marriage watches away from moisture and dust. I know this extra care makes people nervous but not me. I wear one of these special time pieces when I'm in an inspired mood or when I want to make a statement. I put on a 100- or 130-year old Swiss watch while working on my computer, shooting some pictures, meeting friends, or even at formal meetings and dinners. The size and loud ticking sound always draw a lot of attention. People are always impressed by these antique watches and even those who don’t know much about watches enjoy them. Conclusion: Marriage watches are not for everyone. Some people prefer original wrist watches over the marriage ones and would not mind seeing these old pocket watches rot or be scrapped for parts. But two years ago, I befriended an amazing watchmaker in his late 30s, who was extremely skilled and passionate about his work. I realized then that the work he does is a form of art. He brings old movements back to life and makes them look and run like new. I also learned that the watches he creates do not come into being overnight. Often it takes days or even weeks for them to be fully serviced, cleaned, oiled, calibrated, and adjusted to fit the case perfectly. Sometimes special holders have to designed and handmade. I also admire his work because he cares about the quality of the pieces. He inspects all the pivots, jewels, plates, and other parts and sees the potential for the movements to function for decades (or centuries?) to come. ******* ******* ******* ******* ******* Here it is from one of the Posh Swiss Watch Manufacturers: This is a Beautiful Pre-World War One Girard Perregaux Marriage Watch from c. 1910 Genuine Girard Perregaux White Porcelain dial (never restored) and genuine GP hands from the era. All Beautifully Preserved in time. The Movement is a Girard Perregaux in-house one, high grad with a swan neck regulatour. All the pivots, jewels and the Breguet hairspring in a very good condition. Recently fully serviced, cleaned, oiled and calibrated. Running strong and keeping a very good time. Power Reserve (tested) 29 hours and 43 minutes. All converted beautifully in a brand new stainless steel case. The strap is a high quality genuine leather one (by Chermond). Size of the Watch: Case in diameter without crown: 48 mm Lug to lug: 58 mm (hidden crown) Thickness: 10 mm *************************************************

Those are lovely watches “with soul and heart” but they are not water proof at all, they are not shock resistant either and even very moist or dusty environment is no good for them. I myself wear them normally on a daily basis when I feel like but I have always been very careful about my watches and aware of their needs and value.
