Hamilton, having been kept in proper storage, is one of the great finds for the watch purist. It is an example which will be a tremendous focal point to any fine watch collection. A true 'must have' for those wishing perfection. Specifics of This Watch Hamilton 992B with double sunk Montgomery Dial 10K Gold Filled Star Watch Case, B.O.C. (bar over crown) 21 jewel movement (rubies and sapphires, all friction set) All upper jewel settings are gold Gold center wheel 3rd and 4th wheels are round arm gilt Escape wheel is steel Elinvar extra hairspring (elinvar is an alloy that does not lose springiness at different temperatures. This, by the way, won its inventor the Nobel Prize in 1920) Lever Set Factory Adjusted for 6 positions, all keeping accurate time 16 Size (approximately 2” diameter with case included) 3.410 oz. wt. Hamilton Accuracy Testing Before Shipping All Hamilton 992B's were accuracy tested before shipping. They were individually allowed a variation of no more than -0 to +5 seconds for every 24 hours with the crown up at room temperature before being cased. After being cased they were again subject to further testing and were not allowed to show a variation of more than 8 seconds per 24 hours in temperatures ranging from 40 degrees F to 95 degrees F. Only after passing all tests were they allowed to be shipped. NOTE: this was when fine, superlative watch models from mfr's. such as Hamilton, Elgin, Waltham and a few others were built right here in America. This Watch's History Hamilton # C59253 992B 21 Jewel Lever Set Railway pocket watch was shipped in 1941 to a North Carolina Jewelry Store. The exact month is not known, but we do know Pearl Harbor occurred on 12/7/1941, which possibly had some bearing on why it was not purchased. The watch was NEVER sold. The jewelry store owner, also a collector, decided to keep this Hamilton in his safe, where it stayed for the next 6 decades. Finally, in 2002, he sold the watch (and some others) to a collector, who also kept the watch for the next 15 years. It was NEVER used, both parties knowing the value of keeping it N.O.S. Setting Time on Your Hamilton 992B Pocket Watch Both the front bezel and back case unscrew from the watch. To set the time, turn the bezel counter-clockwise until you may carefully remove it, exposing the dial. From the 6 to 7 minute mark you will see an opening with a small lever. Gently pull the lever up and toward the top. When this is done, you may set the watch and then gently push the lever back down. Screw the bezel back in place. The watch is now set. Why Were Watches Made to be Lever-Set? Lever-Setting was a feature found on higher quality watches, including nearly all Railroad Grade timepieces. It was incorporated into the watches to prevent them from ever being accidentally reset to the wrong time. It was actually a requirement of General Railroad Timekeeping Standards. Our Recommendations, Warranty We guarantee this watch will run when wound, keeping excellent time, upon receipt. However, we DO NOT guarantee the watch will not break at some point in the future, without proper preventative maintenance by a qualified watch technician. We DO STRONGLY RECOMMEND this watch be serviced by a competent watch smith in your area upon receipt (it is 76 years old). Fine watches need lubrication (oiling) and any adjustments as necessary to keep on performing at factory levels. You would not purchase an automobile and never have it serviced at regular intervals. This beautiful timepiece is NO DIFFERENT. Properly serviced and cared for, this exquisite Hamilton will almost certainly outlast your lifetime. We checked in our area (they are plentiful throughout the country) and quickly found 2 very qualified watch smiths specializing in mechanical watches with decades of experience. Each stated for under $200 they would completely disassemble the movement, clean and lubricate it. It is recommended this be done every 5-10 years, if the watch would be used. This is a very reasonable fee for a Hamilton 992B that will last for untold decades.
