Remarks:This is a very rare circa 1765 Ellicott London Chain Driven Fusee 1/2 quarter repeater pocket watch. Usually you'll find minute or quarter repeaters. 1/2 quarter repeaters are super rare. This means it not only repeats for every quarter of hour but also if an additional 1/2 quarter (7.5 min) have passed it will repeat as well. I must quickly mention that this watch is a one of its kind in the world. Yes there are other one of their kind watches as well out there. This particular one was originally a hand made watch by John Ellicott (lived 1706-1772). He was an early manufacturer of the cylinder escapement. He became a fellow of the Royal Society and clock maker to King George III. This watch itself in its time was only for the very wealthy. Similar movements were sometimes cased in plain gold cases or silver cases.Although I do not have historical proof of what I am describing here the following is a short history of the watch as received from former owner and his wife Susan George:Mr. William George (a long time client and friend of ours) who passed away about 3 years ago in Sacramento California purchased this watch from England around 2002. My father Paul Irimescu restored the watch for him at that time. After which the watch then worked with perfection. He put it in his collection and kept it there since. Mrs. Sarah Ellicott, the great grand daughter of John Elliott (maker of this watch), married William E. George, which was the great, great grandfather of William George (the now deceased but together with his wife, owners of this watch). This watch can be wound by key, and set time by key (original key included). It was made to be wound about twice daily, keeps accurate time sometimes, but sometimes doesn't work for too long and stops. The chimes work but the pump lever needs to be helped to come back up. Sometimes it does come up on its own. Sometimes it won't chime just right. We haven't put any additional work into the watch at this time with the understanding that parts are impossible to get and it is a fragile timepiece. Theres nothing broken in the watch but it is old, and worn. It will be sold "as is" as a collection item, a display piece, and a piece of historical Horology to someone that can appreciate it for what it is/was, and display it proudly. As you can see from the photos overall cosmetic condition is very good. It has its original enamel dial, original very thick "bullseye" crystal, original solid gold hands (hand setting through the front), a pair case, both inner and outer cases are hand pierced, both in 22k gold, the outer one decorated with enamel, both depicting very different artistic scenes. There is an inner metal insert cover for the bell to chime, inner dust cover, and a verge chain driven fusee movement with diamond end stone and hand pierced balance cock.Pick up is available for this timepiece. Personal delivery can also be arranged for an additional minimal cost for flight. Thank you for stopping by.
