This watch is for the serious Civil War collector or anyone interested in an historical timepiece. This is an American Watch Co. Wm. Ellery key wind and set hunting case with a beautiful gilt 11 jewel movement. The watch has 4 large "window pane" jewels visible in the top plate making this a more rare 11 jewel version with a serial number 98xxx ca. 1863. Also, the case I believe to be silver with the eagle symbol on both the front and back covers. Most of these watches from this era were 7 jewels with a marked "Albata" case, making them less expensive and more durable in the "perils" of war. I have no way of knowing, but my logic tells me this may have been an officer's watch based upon the overall condition as well as the higher jewel count and silver case. At any rate, this watch has withstood the test of time (no pun intended) for over 154 years and still remains in remarkably fine condition! The gilt movement is excellent with no signs of abuse. All of the screws are matching and not "jimmied". The Roman numeral porcelain dial is nice, with a small hairline at the 48 minute marker. The watch has period fancy deep blue hands. The case shows no dents, dings, or scratches only honest pocket wear, and not much of that. The lift spring is missing so the front cover does not pop up, but it only goes to a perfect 90 degrees when raised manually. The watch is running fine and keeping time, but no guarantee to accuracy as to the age of this antique timepiece. A very nice watch from the Civil War period. For the serious collector!!
