The Elgin National Watch Company had its birth in 1864, at the time of the US Civil War. It was the largest Watch Company in terms of production, well topping its closet competitor, the American Waltham Watch Company (1851-1957) of Massachusetts. In 1874, the company officially changed its name to the Elgin National Watch Company and in 1910 it made its first wrist watch. Watches made by the Elgin National Watch Company, provided they are serviced and kept clean, can accurately keep time no matter what their age may be today. This Fancy 18 Karat Rose Gold, Size 16 Boxed Hinge Elgin Grade 84 Doctor's Watch is in Fabulous Condition inside and out.  The Original Dial has Black Roman Numerals with an outer 1/5th Second Chapter and is free of any hairlines or chips.  It has the Original  Blue Steel Moon Hands which are in excellent condtion. The Model 4, Lever Set movement is a Grade 84,  15 Jewel marked Elgin Nat'l Watch Co, Adjusted, Safety Pinion with the serial number 632874 dating it to 1880.  The movement is running and setting properly and keeping excellent time following a complete service last week. The Solid 18 Karat Rose Gold, Box Hinge Case is in excellent condition.  It is Double Hinged and is marked 18, 6746 on the inside case back. (It weighs 2.5 troy ounces without the movement)  Both hinges close and open properly and the bow is nice and tight. Comes in a Wooden Elgin Display Box. RS0536
