Your will receive a FREE signed copy of my latest book, "Waltham Trench Watches of the Great War" with this purchase!Be sure to pick up a copy of my first book "Elgin Trench Watches of the Great War".Up for sale today is an exceptionally beautiful and extremely rare 38mm GIANT Size 6s WWI Elgin Trench Watch that features a high grade 17 jewel movement with a SOLID GOLD TRAIN and a Mealy DUO Crystal Guard! This movement is the absolute BEST size 6s movement that Elgin ever produced! Only 2,600 of these grade 176 movements were made, that is a very low run. The movement features a solid gold center wheel, solid gold timing regulator bar, solid gold 3rd wheel, solid gold 4th wheel, solid gold escape wheel, solid gold raised jewel chatons and all of the balance wheel screws are also made of solid gold. All of the bridges and plate on this movement are solid nickel, NOT the low grade nickel plated brass. Take another look at picture number three again, the movement is clean as a whistle and stunning in it's detailed beauty! It is simply the best of the best! This is one of the MOST sought after American trench watches from the Great War! This absolutely remarkable piece of American craftsmanship is in SUPERB condition and has been beautifully restored! Our Great Grandfather's knew how to make things that would last for generations! The movement was just completely taken apart and serviced on 5-24-2017. It's now in superb running condition and keeping excellent time. This watch has been tested on a professional timegraph 5000 Machine for accuracy so rest assured! I'm sure that you have noticed by now that this is not your ordinary trench watch case by a long shot! This is a GIANT 38mm Silverode trench watch case that was manufactured by the Philadelphia Watch Case Company, circa 1917. This case is highly prized by collectors for its beauty and design features, especially its very large size. The case back and bezel both snap together crisply, just as they should. Plus, this watch still has the over-sized original factory crown! The case has been nicely polished, it now has a lustrous finish once again and looks simply fantastic! This Elgin has been fitted with a heavy duty 38mm Mealy Manufacturing "DUO" Crystal Guard. This is a "snap-on" guard that goes directly over the bezel, it has a nice & tight fit and absolutely makes the watch! This watch is simply incredible! The enamel dial on this trench watch is among the most desirable that Elgin ever produced, the size 6s BOLD Arabic Military Dial! The dial features a bright white face, BOLD Arabic numerals, outer minute markers, the correct blue steel center reservoir military hands for this dial, a sub-second at 6 o'clock and is signed ELGIN near the center. This dial has a little something extra, factory drilled hour marker lum dots. The lum dots and the military hands have been re-lumed using Bergeon luminous material, they will glow in the dark once properly charged by sunlight. The dial is in superb condition without any hairline cracks! This historic and iconic American trench watch has been fitted with a 16mm brown leather strap with white stitching that absolutely makes the watch! Very high quality strap! Take a look at picture number two again, this watch looks stunning on the wrist! The strap will fit a wrist up to about 8 inches and has a matching silver tone buckle. It will have a bit of wear on it because I seriously could not resist wearing this one for a few days, can you blame me? It's kind of like Ferris Bueller and that Ferrari, if you had access to one would you just leave it in a garage? I think not! Here are the movement details: 1896 Elgin, 17 jewels, size 6s, serial number 6906531, grade 176. They just don't make them like this anymore! The case measures 41mm lug to lug, 38mm without the original factory crown with a nice and wide 16mm lug diameter. A brand new glass crystal was just installed just UV cement and a UV curing machine. I also installed a brand new inner sleeve on the crown tube, it now has a nice firm pop, just as it should. This watch is ready to be worn and shown off, it will surely get noticed! I put a lot of time and effort into this Elgin, I'm sure that you will appreciate the quality and quantity of work that has been done. Solid old World craftsmanship at it's finest! You would be seriously hard pressed to find a finer example of this GIANT Size 6s WWI Elgin Trench Watch with a 17 jewel movement featuring a SOLID GOLD TRAIN, or even another one for that matter. This one sets the bar!All watches being shipped Domestically and Internationally will be shipped in a hard shell watch gift box from now on for the MAXIMUM amount of protection during shipment. All of my stock is not listed here on ebay, looking for something special? Although vintage watches may be working on a bench test or in the pictures used to describe the item, they probably have not been used for many decades and need be serviced by a professional watchmaker to ensure optimal performance, unless otherwise stated. Overseas buyers and other buyers outside of the United States should be aware that high altitude flights can have an adverse effect on oils inside a vintage watch and should be serviced upon delivery. No guarantees given about future reliability or timekeeping. Check out my other auctions! I will have many more watches that will be up for bid over the next weeks ! ! ! Thanks for looking!
