This is the one you have been waiting for, a beautiful 14k gold (not plated, not filled but a solid gold case and back) 214 Spaceview Accutron. This watch not only looks good but runs good too. The case is what is known as the "floppy football" or "tilted" design. Some light scratches on the case and lug as shown in the pictures, and very slight on the crystal, (please look at the pictures as they are part of the description) but overall a beautiful watch, especially considering it is 56 years old.
Bulova designed the Spaceview as a special window display watch to show off the Accutron movement. Bulova found a way to print on the inside of the crystal, so a face was not needed. The originals were in 14k gold cases with a 14k gold back to show quality and luxury. The movement is stainless steel as is the ring. Some conversions with gold cases have a gilt (gold colored but not real gold) movement, but from the factory they were all stainless steel. All of a sudden people wanted the "one in the window" and the Spaceview became very popular. Bulova supplied conversion kits to jewelers to convert existing Accutrons to Spaceview (a simple process) and looked for every 14k gold case they could find with the 214 crown in the back movement and made them Spaceviews. This is one of the earliest examples and is marked M1. The watch is marked waterproof but conventional wisdom says Bulova may have been overly optimistic.Eventually they ran out of solid 14k cases and made some in 10k gold filled or just regular stainless. Some were gold electroplated. They also then came out with what is known as chapter rings to indicate the minutes instead of the printed dots. All chapter ring watches were from the factory. A few watches were made in 18k for celebrities. Back in 1961 gold was $36 an ounce so there wasn't much a cost factor, just availability. As for bands, back then jewelers routinely changed bands, but original 14k gold Spaceviews only came with leather bands because Bulova thought the metal bands would scratch the precious metal. You may find one bought new from a jeweler with metal, but that is not how it came from the factory. Because band switching was common, any period band is acceptable. This watch has a Kreisler genuine leather band that is probably the original. One of the loops on the band came off but is included and easily glued but I chose to not touch it and leave it as original as you can get. Also included is a beautiful Accutron box. The inner box is a 9+, the outer box an 8. This is not the original box that this watch came in. It is very rare to find this style and year watch with the original because jewelers would just grab any box from under the counter. Check out what a box costs alone if you can find one as they are rare, especially in this condition. Also rare, and included, is the Accutron coin used to open and replace the battery. This is important because so many cases, especially the real gold ones, are badly scratched because people did not use the proper tool. Overall this is an excellent specimen for any collector or fan of this classic American watch. If you have a new account or no feedback your order will not be accepted. No, I won't sell outside of Ebay and give you my PayPal account. Yes, you can see it in California and inspect it before buying.
