Fortis is a watchmaker based in Grenchen, Switzerland that was founded by Walter Vogt in 1912. Twelve years after its establishment, Vogt set up production with John Harwood, inventor of the automatic wristwatch.In 1926, Fortis released the patented Harwood Automatic, the first self-winding wristwatch, at Baselword. In 1937, Fortis commemorated the company's 25th anniversary by manufacturing and marketing its first chronographs, including the Rolls and the Autorist. The Autorist was also designed by John Harwood and used the movement of the strap to power the watch. By 1943 Fortis introduced the world's first waterproof watches with the Fortissimo models, which were increasingly popular.
In 1962 the Spacematic automatic was constructed to hold up in extreme conditions and temperature changes. The watch was tested by the seven members of a US space mission. In 1994 Fortis introduced strict endurance tests. This same year the Star City Training Center chose the Fortis Official Cosmonauts Chronograph as part of its issued equipment. Fortis automatic wristwatches have proven their space capability inside and outside of the protection of the space station. Since 1994 Fortis has been the exclusive supplier of manned space missions authorized by the Russian Federal Space Agency. In 1997 the same watch, the Fortis Official Cosmonauts Chronograph, became the official watch of the German-Russian space mission MIR 97.

This is a Fortis B-42 Cosmonaut Chronograph watch with all the bells and whistles! it is in superb original condition. The watch was bought at the end of 2002 and has been worn carefully and rarely. It is a large, modern watch which measures 42mm in diameter excluding the winding crown, by 55mm from top to bottom, and is approximately 16mm thick. The watch comes fitted with its original full length, signed bracelet with folding/locking clasp with safety buckle and also has a divers extension. It will easily fit the largest of wrists. The case and bracelet have a gorgeous matte or brushed finish and there is basically very little sign of wear on this timepiece. The off-white dial is covered by a scratch-proof sapphire crystal with AR [anti-reflective] coating and has an open back observation window to allow the user to see the super high grade Valjoux 7750 automatic movement working [also has a sapphire crystal on the back]. The watch has a screw-down back and screw-down over sized, signed winding crown. This rugged beauty is water resistant and rated to 200M - or 666Ft. The bracelet is held to the case using solid screw-in pins and the bracelet also uses screw-in pins for the best in reliability and strength. The dial has an inner tachymetre scale as well as a numeric 0-60 track and three sub-registers - for seconds, minutes, and hours. The day date window is located at the 3 o’clock position and can be "quick-set”. It has small triangles showing you which way to turn the crown. The gun-metal blue hands are hollow with very bright luminous tips. The hour markers located beside the blue, raised Arabic numbers also have bright luminescence. The metal bracelet is near perfect (please note that the leather bands you see in one of the pictures with this listing are NOT included with this watch, sorry). This watch comes with its outer cardboard box, inner presentation box, and papers, etc. Hailed as the watch of the International Space Station program - they have become very well known, respected, and sought after by collectors over the past few years. The watch has been tested with all chronograph features working perfectly.
