I am please to offer from my private collection the ultimate Memento Mori Skull Single Hand Verge Fusee Oignon watch by Andre Hory a Paris c1680's!
This is an extremely important historic pocket watch-it has been made specially for the Roman Pope Innocent XI in 1676.
The watch has a huge oignon solid silver case(67mm in diameter,38mm thick),decorated with a rised skeleton leaning on a long case clock and holding the Papal Ferula staff. You also can see a fallen Papal Tiara,Bishop Tiara and Knights helmets all fallen on the ground-symbolize the transience of human life.It means that it doesnt matter if you was knight ,bishop or pope-the exit is one and the same for all.
This all should remind to the Pope himself that he is mortal too.
On the case is engraved the famous Latin Motto "Sic Transit Gloria Mundi" that means "Thus passes the glory of the world." It has been interpreted as "Worldly things are fleeting." The phrase was used in the ritual of papal coronation ceremonies between 1409 (when it was used at the coronation of Alexander V) and 1963.As the newly chosen pope proceeded from the sacristy of in his , the procession stopped three times. On each occasion a papal master of ceremonies would fall to his knees before the pope, holding a silver or brass reed, bearing a of smoldering . For three times in succession, as the cloth burned away, he would say in a loud and mournful voice, "Pater Sancte, sic transit gloria mundi!" ("Holy Father, so passes worldly glory!")
