The Kew observatory was a subsidiary of the famed Greenwich observatory and was a government department responsible for testing and certifying marine chronometers prior to issue to the Royal Navy. The original system was that any company could submit a timepiece to the observatory and if it passed the Navy would then purchase the timepiece at a fixed price. Usually the fixed price would be below the cost of making the timepiece, but the Navy’s purchase would then allow the maker to put “Maker to the Admiralty” on all other timepieces they produced and the promotional advantages of this outweighed the money they MAY have lost on the original submitted item.
As the Royal Navy expanded, so did their chronometer requirements, also there sprang up a demand for deck watches; these were accurate pocket watch sized timepieces which were used to transfer the time from the chronometer (which was normally kept below deck) to the officer who was responsible for “shooting the longitude”, who would, obviously, be on deck.
Obviously these watches had to be as accurate as the marine chronometers and so Kew was tasked with the job of rating them; the tests lasted 45 days (3 times as long as the current COSC tests) with a much higher variation in the tested temperatures.ALL SALES ARE FINAL
