Ollech and Wajs produced two versions of the Early Bird. The earlier version has a Glycine style bezel with the following bezel characteristics: sharp notches, colors split evenly between the 18 and 6, narrowing hash marks and fat font numbers. The later version has a bezel with the following characteristics: rounded notches, colors split evenly between the 12 and 24, straight hash marks and thin font numbers. There are some other defining characteristics for the earlier versions as well, such as movements stamped OLLECH+WAYS (not WAJS) and lower recorded serial numbers. I've only collected the earliest versions of the Early Bird and I currently have two others with the exact same bezel and serial numbers in the 333xxx and 337xxx range. This particular O&W has a serial number of 336689. The glossy black "Swiss" signed dial is lovely and the original tritium on the dial and hands, which is fully intact and emits a faint, short lived glow after being exposed to bright light, has developed a warm and inviting buttermilk patina. The bezel, which has retained its vibrant Yale blue and pink rose hue, rotates smoothly bidirectionally and looks great. The thick, all stainless steel case is in wonderful condition, free of any oxidation and showing minor wear that could be polished out if desired. The outer edge of the case back is stamped "WATERPROOF ANTIMAGNETIC INCABLOC STAINLESS STEEL SWISS MADE" with an engraved diver followed by "20 ATM TESTED,""2834" and "336689" stamped in the center. The inside of the case back has the service marking of acclaimed Michigan watchmaker Dominique Wieland, who completely overhauled the watch for a previous owner in June of 2013. The crystal is in excellent condition. This watch measures approximately 36 mm excluding the crown, approximately 39.5 mm including the crown and approximately 19 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 9 mm. Including the crystal case thickness measures approximately 10 mm. The 17 jewels "OLLECH+WAYS" stamped FHF 72 manual wind movement is absolutely pristine and keeps accurate time. After recently winding the sharply threaded crown 26 full revolutions the watch had a healthy power reserve of approximately 41 hours. The crown winds smoothly. When setting the time and winding the watch the dial ratchets/levitates slightly and there is a bit of vibration, but the dial stays in place. The dial is "not" loose. When the hands aren't being moved or the crown isn't being wound the dial is stationary. I believe this issue is from 2 missing screws that help hold the movement in place, which would likely be a simple and inexpensive fixed. Other than sounding and feeling a bit different when setting the time and winding the watch, it runs strong, keeps near perfect time and has a solid power reserve. In June of 2013 this watch underwent a full overhaul by Michigan watchmaker Dominique Wieland. To put the issue mentioned above in perspective, after spending several hundred dollars on a full overhaul the previous owner either didn't notice the issue or didn't think it was important enough to send back to Dominique. Although this watch currently runs as it should and the movement is exceptionally clean, considering that it is over 45 years old it and since its been years since its last service, a complete overhaul is suggested.
As mentioned above, this is a vintage watch that hasn't been serviced in years. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old-school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time. A full overhaul is recommended to keep this watching running strong. Any servicing costs going forward are your responsibility. This sale is final and there will be no refunds given of any kind, so please thoroughly read this entire listing and kindly ask any and all questions you may have prior to buying. And please study the 12 high magnification pictures carefully as they are part of the description and serve as an accurate representation of the condition of this watch. Expedited and insured shipping along with signature confirmation will be provided. Thanks for looking!
