RARE - Dual Hour Hands1913 Waltham Vanguard 23jModel 1908watch serial number 19077069size 16scase serial number 2397696Montgomery Dial Dual Hour-Hands (one hour hand is blue, the other is red) Why 2 hour Hands ? The trains of this era had no computers or GPS to keep track of their location. Sometimes, several trains per day would use the same tracks. The best way to make sure the track was clear for the next train was to keep a strict time schedule. This meant not only the best quality watches were required for use, but also regulations were in place to keep conductors and engineers from adjusting their pocket watches while the train was in route. There were a very few conductors and engineers that actually crossed time zones on a regular basis. To keep up with the time change, they would use pocket watches with dual Hour hands, each hand represented a different time zone. Swing-Out Gold Case Railroad GradePocket WatchLever SetCrescent Watch Case Co.Engravings inside case show previous servicingThis watch does run ... once wound, it may need a slight movement (wiggle) of the watch to start ticking ... I have not wound it completely to test the entire length of time a full wind will run ... the case is in excellent condition both front and back ... the Montgomery Dial does have a couple of hairline cracks, which take a very close inspection to see (one near the number 2, one near the number 8, one just above the right of the number 6)
