Description Features: Fusee, 12-Hour Dial Movement: Mechanical (Hand-winding) Escapement Type: Verge MPN: Does Not Apply Year of Manufacture: 1810-1819 Serial Number: 24 Closure: Open Face Pocket Watch Size: 50 M.M
(Broad arrow heraldry(pheon)symbol on the inner case) Made in 1818 with the very low production number of 24 by William Robson from North Shields which is in the borough of North Tyneside,Tyne and Wear, historically part of Northumberland and lying about 8 miles from Newcastle. He was a watch-maker from 1807 'til 1824. Notice the broad arrow mark known as a "pheon" on the inner case...If the arrow points up it is a mark of Government property if it points down as on this watch then it is a mark of heraldry.Featured on the "coat of arms" of a few families, most prominently on the arms of the Sidney family of Penhurst.Of course I have no way of knowing for certain which family this "pheon" belonged to. MOVEMENT...Superb even tick keeping good time for a verge, gaining about ten miutes a day. There is enough length left on the hair-spring to take up the ten minutes but as the tick is so sweet and even with the hair-spring being nice and flat I am reluctant to disturb it again after giving the watch a full and careful service.Very tall fusee cone with external click pre-dating the later internal click fusee cones.Nice smooth wind up to the fusee chain stop-work which works perfectly. All the usual 200 year old embellishments of the period featuring a very fancy pierced balance cock, hand engraving and silver regulating disc.At some point the winding square has got rounded off and filed back to square which of course makes it smaller which is why the watch comes with two very nice antique keys..The square one for winding, the round one for setting the hands from the front.Must be one of the last movements using the Tompion regulator as 1818 is generally considered to be the final year of the Tompion regulator and the year the simpler Bosely regulator came to the fore.1818 is also close to the cut-off point where under the main-spring barrel the worm drive for pre-tensioning the main-spring was used as on this watch.A very pretty embroidered anti-rattle cloth sits inside the outer case.Runs the length of the chain effortlessly ticking well in any position. PAIR-CASE...Both cases in great condition ,small dent on the front bezel which looks ten times worse than it is in my magnified photo with exaggerated reflections. My cases are polished with nothing more that a silver polishing cloth and "silver-dip" first if they are very black. Both case's carry the London hall-mark for 1818 and both with the makers initials R.E...Very good hinges with the opening button working well and lids closing with a "snap". DIAL,HANDS & CRYSTAL...No damage to the dial,no repairs.Lovely blued steel beetle and poker hands..Bulls-eye crystal has no scratches that I can see.Watch measures just under 50m.m. excluding pendant and bow...My favorite sized watch before they got stupidly huge. Please study the photgraphs for more details,i will only ship to pay pal verified adress with signed confirmation.
International customers please note, and make sure u have to pay all customs and import duties which ever country u belong, bond by you only May you all get what you want for less than your maximum bid...good luck.
