Electromechanical movements are sort of in their own little world. They were mostly produced before the quartz watch was invented and were a blend of traditional watchmaking philosophy mated to the modern advancement of electronics manufacturing at the time. As such, they can sometimes get lumped in with quartz movements, but they share very little in common other than a battery. This Lip Nautic Ski Electronic is powered by the R148 caliber, a French made electromechanial movement that debuted in 1962. The idea was to replace the mainspring with a much more efficient battery as the power source of the movement. However, transmitting that power was an interesting problem to solve. Lip's solution was to have the battery induce a magnetic field that would impulse a small oppositely charged plate fitted to a traditional balance. The result was an accurate movement that beat at 18,800vph, but the unique escapement led the watch to actually "tick" at 2.5hz rather than 5. With a name like Nautic, a water resistant case is only appropriate, and for this generation of Nautic Ski Lip chose to house their unique R148 in an EPSA Super Compressor case. The internal rotating bezel and dual oversized cross-hatched crowns have become a staple in vintage dive watches as they were used by a number of top brands throughout the 60s and into the 70s (although the designs did tend to get a little funky later on). Rounding out the package is a grey dial with oversized lumed markers and big luminous hands for maximum visibility, and the signature Lip lightning bolt logo to show off what's beating inside. The Lip Nautic Ski Electronic is a great watch embodying 1960s diver styling with the technological advancements of the time that often gets overlooked but certainly has a well deserved place in horological history.
